Main Distribution Board for IEC61439

07/06/2011 5:42 AM

I am in the midst of designing a MDB of 6000A Power Switchgears and Controlgears for the Type Test with IEC 61439-2.

May i know:-

1. The recommended Clearance and Creepage Distance

2. The recommended short circuit withstand Icw for main horizontal busbar, vertical busbar.

3. The recommended Impulse withstand voltage, Uimp for the busbar support

Dear JesKong,

I have lots of experience in the 6000A switchboard sector. and pleased to make the following suggestions:

1: the clearance and clearance distances are not specific to the Current rating of the assembly, and is based on the Insulation voltage and Impulse voltage of the system. IEC61439 defines these distances, but you will find them to be very small, the movement that may occur during Short Circuit testing could create a problem if these distances are used. Also the distances between the phases will have a significant effect on the electro-magnetic forces during the short circuit.

2: There is not standard that defines the Icw in comparison to the current rating. The potential fault level is dependent on the supply transformer(s) If you have an iPhone / iPod or if your phone has the Android operating system, search for an application called Transcalc, it will give you the potential Short Circuit level and the output current of the transformer.

3: this again is dependent on the operational voltage of the system, there is a table in the standard which gives you the applicable voltage. As most 6000A boards are connected directly or very near to the transformer, the "service entry level" is the suitable column. you must take into consideration the Uimp of the devices used throughout the assembly and ensure that all connected directly to the busbar are all of the same rating, the Uimp is not just a busbar support issue.

We are exhibiting at the ASEAN Elenex exhibition in Kuala Lumpur at the end of the month, if you are able to visit our booth it is 2406. I am also doing a talk at 14:00 for 1 hour on the 22nd July in seminar room 1 which is focused on IEC61439.

Finally, there is free training on our website: http://www.3phasedesign.com ,just go to the training portal.

I hope that this is of assistance; I would be pleased to give more specific information if you provide me more detail.

Regards

Rob Swann
