Internet Explorer & Firefox at the Same Time

07/07/2011 5:42 AM

After a Windows update about a month ago. I've recently started to have a minor annoying issue with Win Internet Explorer 8 & Firefox 5. When I click on a link say in a CR4 newsletter it opens up in both Explorer & Firefox.

As long as I'm in Firefox before I click on the link it uses just Firefox.

I'm using an old XP with all the most recent updates. I've made Firefox my preferred choice of browser. I've reinstalled Firefox & repaired Explorer. I thought about uninstalling Explorer but with the way Microsoft Software works, I was afraid it would really screw something up.

I've searched here on CR4 and on the web for an answer but haven't come across much help yet. Any suggestions on how to get it to stop doing this? Like I said its not a real serious issue just an annoying one.

Thanks

Do you have FF and IE open simultaneously?

I can have them both closed but they both open simultaneously when I click on a hyperlink of any kind. But if I already have Firefox open and click on a link then it just uses Firefox.

I don't think they can both be closed. If you are on a website, and click on a hyperlink, I would think that one of the browsers would have to be running.

I would go here and download an earlier version of IE that worked the way you wanted it to.

Maybe Garthh or someone can advise on how to do this without wiping out your bookmarks.

Just as a sidenote, I've recently done some MS updates, and I've got randomly skipping keyboard strokes...........real pain. I just upgraded to IE9 a few minutes ago, and it seems to have stopped. IE 9 won't work with XP.

Just the usual love/hate relationship with both MS, and computers in general.

Sorry guess I forgot to add if I click on a link in an email. Like the CR4 daily digest. It opens both IE and Firefox. But once I get firefox open and I open another link from say the CR4 digest it ignores IE. I can even close IE as long as FF is open it won't reopen IE. Its only the first link that seems to open both after that FF seems to take control.

Like I said its not really a serious issue just annoying.

You don't mention what email you are using, but since you are using FF, I would think that if you set that as your default browser, and set up and use Mozilla Thunderbird for your email, they should integrate nicely, and the IE window shouldn't open.

Thunderbird is what I use.................no problems.

This link may be pertinent.

Check your setting for the default browser configured in your system? You may have some issues on your default settings? Also, there are software programs that have a built-in, pre-configured preference for downloading updates like Internet Explorer.

If you are using windows live mail or Outlook or Outlook Express (or any other Microsoft email) there might be a preference in the email software that is opening IE, but your computer is following your preference and opening FF.

I use Windows live mail (but I miss outlook) but don't often click on links in email because I am used to it opening IE when I want to use FF (no matter my preferences) so I cut and paste into one of the many FF windows & tabs I keep open.

That's what I am thinking.

By the time I scrolled down on the thread, I found your post. Most logical answer.

G'day,

Check your settings in IE and FF to see if any or both are set to check if it is the default browser on start up. FF is under "options>advanced". IR? I don't use it. I use Seamonkey 2.1.

When I upgraded to FF5 last week it warned me about IE file conflicts. I use Outlook Express and XP Pro and do not experience your issues.

Go to Add/remove programs and remove IE .... you can't fully remove it MS prohibits that, unfortunately because it uses IE in the background to access your pc for 'updates' etc .... they refuse to use any other browser for that!!!but at least that action will hide it (most of the time!).
