Re-Wiring a Dandy Drill?

07/07/2011 9:52 PM

I got a small

yes

BOSCH drill SB350-2 for present.

A very handy thing but it is wired according UK market. 240 Volts/50 Hz.

Is there a trick to play around with the coils so that I can use it on 120 Volts?

Performance comes second to ease of use.

As I understand all the coils are in series now. I have seen also a switch with a diode between the 2 stator coils. Any suggestions? Thank you.

I don't know, but I doubt that the drill motor has series/parallel (dual voltage) coils; if it did, this would most likely have been mentioned. If your wiring is like most U.S. wiring, you can feed the drill with with a 2-pole 240V circuit. Otherwise, you may need a transformer. The frequency shouldn't matter, except maybe with sustained continuous running.

Thank you. Now that I read it, the title is somewhat funny to me. GA

Perhaps go to a site such as this and order parts to convert. This is not an endorsement, I just found the parts order form.

This is what about everyone could do. Or buy a new one for the proper voltage. As soon as I get the battery of my camera to work - has expired too, and might have a little juice for the final pictures. (I am a bit isolated from the "real world" - ordering "abroad" is not that easy) I will make a picture of what I have in mind.

It might not be the most brilliant solution, but if someone can improve it, I'd appreciate it a lot. I have some other drills, but this is my favorite because of the weight and format.

And of course, because I can say it is a Bosch (LOL)

To change the speed a diode is shortened or put in series too. Seems to work.

When that drill dies on me, I will overcome the loss, I guess. Thank you for the parts list and link. The drill this size however doesn't cost enough in comparison with the price of the parts and the taxes involved to import these here.

I sort of figured that £30, plus some ridiculous ship charges would be too much. But sometimes I spend too much on something with an emotional attachment or value.

Let us know what you find, someone can probably help.

This is what I have figured out after taking it apart. I thought if the rotor is wired strong enough, it might last for a while. Anyway I'll leave it open until someone enlightens me. Thanks.
