Air Moving Motors

04/16/2007 11:45 AM

I presently work for a motor manufacturer who makes motors that move air--vacuum or blowing--(200-700 peak air watts). I have been tasked for identifying new uses for these motors, as the traditional uses are primarily in vacuums--central and car washes. Does anyone have any experience using these types of motors in the material handling, manufacturing, transportation, medical or any other field? I am on the marketing side and will recommend new products, packaging, etc. if there are other markets out there that can support it. Any feedback would be greatly accepted.

I'm a Machinist for a large high-speed Mfg. Company in Northern CA.. I don't know much about motors, are they single or three phase? We have an elaborite conveying system which consists mainly of plastic interlinked mats of various width driven like a belt to move the product along. What we make is very light in weight there are several areas of the production line which uses vacum to hold the product to the mat as it bends to a vertical position for transferring between floors. These areas are called (oddly enough) "vacum transfers". I would estimate there to be easily 50 motors throughout the plant used for creating vacum, and they run 24hrs. a day. I'm guessing that 90% of them are three phase and between 1hp & 3hp. That's just a guess. Let me know some of the specs and what the price range is.

Do you mean blowers (e.g., Roots blowers)? Blowers move large volumes of air at pressures of up to about 35 psi and, I understand, generate a partial vacuum, as well. I have clients who manufacture such blowers for various uses. Some are going to China for aeration use in waste water treatment. Other blowers are used for conveying granular or powder solids through pipelines and transport chutes.

Telex,

We make blowers ideal for low pressure, high CFM applications. Applications that use smaller regenerative blowers may be a good fit, as our products are much less expensive and we are introducing a brushless version for long life. Additionally, the same motor/blower combinations are used in commercial grade vacuum products, such as whole house vacuums or dental evacuation units that have an intermittent duty cycle. Some of our products can be seen at www.ameteklamb.com.

Sincerely,

Dave

Do you import parts, materials, assemblies, finished goods? I am a lawyer and import/export regulation is my area.

Dave,

I hear that a lot and, if your company attempts to be well versed, then it is likely well ahead of many. Experience, however, has shown that nobody knows everything they need to know or does everything right...especially the global players, as they have so much more to keep track of and so many more scenarios that have to be reconciled with the law. Some of our clients are among the largest global companies and, yet, frequently bring their questions and/or problems to us...e.g., Halliburton. There is a huge gulf between "well versed" and perfect and the U.S. government intends to make a violator of everyone. Good luck.

Scott
