Molecular Formula

07/12/2011 7:16 PM

Regarding the natural gas composition, does anybody know what the following refer to, i mean the IUPACname and molecular formula?

1) HypoC6,HypoC7,HypoC8,HypoC9 ?

3) Mcyclo-C6?

4) C2-Benzene?

5) Mcyclopentane?

Thanks

These look like some odd and abnormal methods of denoting chemical formulae.

1) The C6, C7 etc. must surely refer to the number of carbon atoms in the compound. But why prefixed with "Hypo"? "Cyclo" would be more likely, but "hypo" - bizarre.

3) The "M" is probably (but incorrectly) short for methyl. The compound is therefore probably methyl cyclohexane: C6H11CH3

4) C2-Benzene is probably ethyl benzene: C6H5C2H5

5) Methyl cyclopentane: C5H9CH3

I don't know how to draw these structures on this CR4 site for you, but you can find them easily enough on the on the internet.

Many thanks for giving me a hand....

I also did a lot of internet research and went through some books...couldn't find anything specifically with these five...AS you said it looks very bizzare

Found this "C2 benzene means a hydrocarbon containing two aliphatic carbon atoms and a benzene" here.

here another doc for cyclo c6

as to everything else ????

Where did you find these terms. It could clue us in on if there a bad translation or some other organic chemistry.

By your name are you in a operator training program or some other program.

Many thanks Metalsmith....i am a junior design engineer in doing piping, prssure vessels, heat balance, thermal design, stoichiometric analysis..etc...

So we got this spec. from the client (natural gas constituents) for stoichimetric analysis, so i was not sure to whether to go back to client for clarifications....since most of the people i have asked never heard of this, as you said i'm going back to the client to specify what these are....

Thanks for the info. I did some more digging found this thread. About half way down the poster referred "Hypo components" as coding into a computer simulation program pro/II and hysys.

I believe from everything so far your trying to figure out the contents of the components that makeup natural gas? I found an AppNote from Emerson Process on the second page gives some components C6-9 and others.

Also doing some reading. I found This.

Good luck with natural gas analysis.

With everything I've read some of the heavier hydrocarbons in NG "that have not been removed" can drop out of the gas "dew point". That I think changes the BTU content not to mention the liquid content can damage equipment and cause other problems.

I hope this helps you and not lead you astray.

Highly Appreciate Your Reply.

That was very useful.

Thanks for doing an extensive research for my question.

From that links i have got some idea about these things now.

Your welcome, I do enjoy figuring out and finding information. I'm an information junkie. The more I learn the more I want. That's one of the reasons I lurk around here. Ya just never know what you might pickup here.

Hi Metalsmith,

My quest for Hypo meaning ended, as i found the source....http://yunus.hacettepe.edu.tr/~ealper/kmu346/tutorial/SimBasis.pdf

Hypo was actually Hypothetical...:)

Good deal, It makes sense. Your comment Is on topic not off topic. It/you answered your own question. We learned something. All is good, life is good.

Good luck
