Hot Insulation for Engine Exhaust Pipe

07/12/2011 10:15 PM

Dear!

I have an Engine Exhaust pipe, OD=406mm, surface temp. 450 deg. C, the engine run 24/24.

Now the requirement are: layer of insulation, max. thickness 100mm must be wrap over the pipe so that outside surface of insulation is 55 deg C, insulation must be non-combustible type.

Can you recommend: type of insulation and also thermal calculation to ensure the material meet above requirements.

Thanks.

I actually used this stuff during my active noise cancellation days. Hot gas flows more easily so we kept the heat in the pipe with it.

Every NASCAR racer on the planet uses it, too.

100mm of concrete would do.

OK!

I want to explain more. Engine is on the Top-side of well head under ABS rule, so the insulation must be: light (concrete is rejected), non-combustible, easy for installation and maintenance, ...

I doubt suggested material not meet my requirement (outside surface is 50 deg C). I also try the mineral wool but it not work. The most suitable is calcium silicate, but I want to find another; cheaper, ease to be supplied, ...

You may want to look at companies like this one McKay Marine

These types of custom made insulation wraps work great; initial cost is higher; but easy to remove for maintenance. Greatly reduces the sound levels also. Easily made to get your requirement of 55C.

Look into Pyrogel for larger/multiple installations. I buy it from Thermal Corrosion Solutions out of the Memphis, TN area. It is good for up to 800 deg C and can be used anywhere you want to wrap it. I buy the 5mm thick in 1400 square foot rolls for industrial applications. It costs about $5 per square foot for the 10 mm thick material and about $3.50 per square foot for the 5 mm material. There is a cutting fee for small orders, but it is pretty versatile and water repellent.

Hope that helps you, or someone else,

David
