Swivel Type Hardware

07/13/2011 5:37 PM

I need to make a swivel platform with a 40"x40" x3/4" plywood turntable ....to tape up boxes for shipping.

The boxes will be between 24" L x 18" W and 36" L x 24" w

The weight will be between 30 lbs. to 75 lbs.

The weight will NOT always be distributed evenly so the 40"x40" 3/4" plywood 'table' will always carry an uneven load as we turn the table to shrink wrap, band or strap our shipping boxes.

* I see round ones with ball bearings and I see square ones that fit on Lazy Susan's.

Which one do you all think would give the longest service?

Comments, please.

I wondered about making a turntable with plywood and golf balls for bearings. Can't remember what on earth I wanted it for now!
I'd go for round, fewer corners to whack your ankles.

I've been sitting on one of these on a bar stool for 30 years. My weight is never distributed evenly. Keep it oiled.

Stainless Steel Swivel

Extra heavy duty. Will not rust.

$20.00USD, probably $8.00 in CS.

GA

A quick note: clicking on Lyn's picture of the bar stool swivel takes you to the site. (May not be obvious to everyone.)

You could go with either one as a fixed center point, and use some of these to counter the lack of balance.

Not an endorsement of this site.

I know you've seen these...................you could even get it up off the ground.

This turntable will be bolted to an existing heavy , flat table approx. 40" high.... so we can work at waist high level.

I'd just go for the largest diameter, heavy duty one you can find.

Hello netmaker, here an idea use a lazy susan for the center.{like a few suggested} Then 4 - 8 ball transfer units in a circumference closer to the outer edge. All low profile, table is supported just rate the ball transfers units for max load one could see. Not a lot of money to setup.

Nice one! Much better than regular casters.

Along with those on the outer edges, I wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea to slap a piece of sheet metal on the table top, (if it's wood), to prevent them from wearing a groove in the surface.

Those dimples might make them a little noisy.

Maybe if we sanded the dimples out and made them perfect spheres.......................................oops! Over engineering, my specialty.

Sadly, my wife wouldn't be a bit surprised to come home and find me sanding the dimples out of golf balls.

"What are you doing now?"

"Noise/vibration reduction, what does it look like?"

A thin piece would add to its life or could use counter top laminate glued to the bottom. Though in the long run it the wood top did grove just change it out you would only need to unbolt the lazy susan to replace.

Re: Swivel Type Hardware

Yes to all suggestions.

I see the over all idea is backing the square type, heavy duty more than the lower type ring inside of a ring.

The roller balls on the outside and under the actual table would surely support the 40x40 revolving table even better. I am guessing if there is any height difference i can use some big ol' washers to match up.

Once again, its why I come here....to bounce ideas off my buddies.

Thank you all.

From what I've seen the lazy susan would be what you need to build up in height. Most likely a stack of washers under the mount screws or a piece of ply-wood to make up the difference in height.

I've also seen low-profile ball bearings for lazy susans in 3 different diameters. If loaded off-center, they slide, but hold together. For a really strong one, car wheel parts work.

Good call!

Cut the end of an axle off a car, and mount the plywood to the tire rim.

GA from me....................that will last forever.

Best idea yet.

Just replace it with the rear wheel truck from an in-line motortrike from another thread. Don't we just love bastard hybrid vehicles?

I know this answer isn't as much fun as making it but... for between $200 and $500 you can get an industry standard manual turntable or manual carousel from any MH supply company. Their catalogs are also great for ideas.

A circular pattern of 8 non-swivelling casters with the axles all aligned to the center of the plywood should do the trick and would probably last half-way to forever.

I liked the swivel link but this might be more helpful

I never thought of something with a dead stop. This will help when we stick on the shipping tags and FEDEx labels.

Other wise we have the box constantly trying to turn as I try to puch on it ....making a 2 person job instead of one.

GA on this one.

Here a way to lock the turntable on the cheap

Just drill a mounting hole through the base table on the side your working from. Mount the push/pull clamp. When you want to keep table from turning flip lever. You can get different spindle tips to apply friction to bottom of turn table platter.

Since you want to use this for final packaging and labeling why not use a transfer ball table top? They also make transfer ball strips as well. 2 or 3 parallel to each other 8 -12" apart OC would do the trick.

Transfer ball table shown below:

Re: Swivel Type Hardware

I saw this and was impressed. What I need in addition to easy movabilty is the ability to stop and lock the table so we can pull the tape gun over the box solidly and/or stick the documents labels on. If it is too rolly polly we still need to have someone hold it place. These nets pack messy and in most instances I am using a 36" wood clamp to hold the flaps together before pulling the tape gun across.

This roller plate you show would be perfect for nice, uniform , easy packed items. I like the Dead Stop feature on the swivel plate.

Thank you for the input.

Re: Swivel Type Hardware

Thank everybody.

I found a 500 lb. load bearing swivel set up.

The push pin idea from McMaster's is a definite must for stopping the table from turning.

Looks like cr4 came through again.

Sorry, but the car axle thing just seemed too redneck tech heavy and obtrusive for my refined Coon @$$ Acadian French style net shop.

Grits and eggs done been finished so its time for me and the hound dogs to head for the shop for another day of "tying all those knots and things!"

Thank everyone again.
