4 Wheel Tire Size

07/13/2011 6:50 PM

A 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4X4 had (4) 265/70/17 tires from the manufacturer. A previous owner went to (4) 275/70/17 tires at some point. Will it be ok to downsize to (4) 245/70/17? I'm thinking other than calibrating the speedometer it should be ok?

We just had another thread like this. Put the tires on and go about your business. The computer will learn this and all will be well.

You will get many "expert" opinions about pit falls of this conversion. Ignore them.

Look here: Two Different Tire Sizes on Same Vehicle

OK, maybe I should have said it will only matter to knit pickers.

A point that would cause the biggest issues was never brought up in that discussion.

The effect on ABS brakes and active traction control. THOSE aren't going to be really happy if you do it.

Changing all 4 tires to a different size will not affect traction control, or ABS. They measure differential speed, not absolute. So, your comment must be related to the other discussion, NOT THIS ONE.

I submit to you that ABS and traction control will not sense the slight difference in rotational speed as a problem. We're talking 3 % here. Your ABS would activate every time you turned a corner.

A lot of ignorance and stupidity has been displayed in the other thread.

I pity the poor OP, who doesn't know who the wackos are.

You are right....Somehow I got this thread confused with TWO different sized tires on the same vehicle thread. As long as all 4 are equal....I agree its a non-issue. Having run (for a VERY short time) 2 winter tires on an ABS vehicle....I did see reall issues on braking (quickly corrected with an additional 2 matching winter tires) even on dry or slightly wet pavement. But that has veered off of the original topic somewhat. All 4 equal will only effect the speedometer accuracy.

Depending on how far off his speedo is based on GPS readings he might not even want to take the time for a recalibration.

As far as I know that first number like 275 is only the width of the tire. If the wheel rims stay the same, the scrub-offset stays the same and the speedo etc will not be effected.

The 70 is supposed to be the height of the wheel rim to the floor.

If you have power steering you will not feel much difference but steering is "harder" with wider tires if you do not have power assisted steering.

As long as all 4 tyres are the same it won't matter too much.

Aside from being slightly cheaper why do you want to go for the narrower tyres?

The "70" is known as the Aspect Ratio, which is the ratio of width to height of the tyre. So the 245/70 tyre will be notionally "shorter" than the 265/70 or the 275/70 tyres.

You will notice some tradeoff in cornering/braking performance but if your not a 10/10ths sort of driver than maybe not.

These are great responses. I believe that for a small fee from the dealer the speed can be recalibrated. The main reason is to lower the truck slightly. I have sidesteps but get complaints from the wife and grand kids.
