Why The Middle Phase Excitation Current Always Lower On Transformer

07/15/2011 8:56 AM

Dear friends,

In excitation current test on three legged core type transformer, why the middle phase excitation current always lower than the other two outer phases. Kindly explain.

Should not be significant in properly designed transformers. the small difference will come due to the difference in the magnetic circuit reluctance. Just think about the layout and it will be clear.

The center phase has core steel on both sides of it as well as its own core. The outer phases only have their core and the middle phase's core steel adjacent, so more of its magnetic field has to travel outside of the steel. As the Anonymous Poster said, it affects the magnetic circuit.

Thank u very much.

I understood that Middle limb has high magnetic reluctance than outer limbs. And so middle limb takes low current compared to outer limbs, am I right?
