High Voltage Testing

07/17/2011 12:20 AM

If we are doing a VLF Testing for 33KV cable, how much time the test should be done and how much voltage have to apply.

You may be paying for consequential damages if the cable fails in the filed, safety related test are normally mandatory legal requirements and has to be done in the exact spirit of standard, Someone in the forum may answer your question and most probably right one, But My question is are you going to follow it with out having a look on the standard?

I am sure there are people in BIS who can help you and that is what they are paid for.

You should commission a competent engineering firm to do your testing. If you do it, the results will be meaningless, if not fatal.

We VLF (0.1Hz) test XLPE insulated cables by applying 3 times the phase to earth voltage for 1 hour.

However the supplier of the equipment should provide guidance for your particular type of cable.

What is the advantage of VLF test over Hipot test(at what voltage, duration and maximum leakage current ?.)

If cables are too long, it will take more more charging current (Capacitive) at the time of AC HV test. So there need an instrument which can supply more and more KVA. It will make the instrument uneconomical.

Where comes the role of VLF tester. When we are using 0.1Hz instead if 50Hz (500 times lesser frequency), only 500 times lesser current is required to charge the same cable. So we can make KVA rating of the instrument 500 times lesser.

This is the advantage of VLF Testing.

Thanks.. Finally I got the answer.

Is it same for AC & DC HV Testing.

For hipot testing we do not test for 1hr. Can you give the test voltage for each voltage rating of cables, duration and maximum leakage current allowed during that period.

It is for 11 KV and 33 KV XLPE Cables. Length of both are around 1 km and new cables. Then how much will be the allowable leakage current for AC & DC HV Testing? (I don't know how much is the allowded leakage current).

For VLF as well as Hipot test please give voltage to be applied, duration of test and maximum leakage current allowed for various voltage ratings of cables (400,660, 1000,3300,6000,11000,13800,22000,33000Volts) and insulations(paper, pvc, xlpe etc).

Please quote the relevantstandards(BS/IEC/IEEE/NEC/UL/ASTM etc)

actually that is my question. For 11kv & 33kv cables how much test voltage and duration is advisable. Also what is the leakage current allowded, If it is new cable having 1km length.
