Project Ideas

07/20/2011 3:54 PM

Which projects are suitable at UG level for mechanical engineering? Preferably combining the following disciplines such as materials & manufacturing, thermofluids, piping engineering, cad software and a mathematical software like maple or matlab?

Build a log splitter.

The framework/structure and components are great mechanical design tasks, the hydraulics are great for your thermo and piping, you can design it using 3D CAD, and run the circuit through Matlab.

When you're done, you can sell it for $1,500-$3,000 to recoup any costs, and make some profit at the same time!

Was it the reference to maple in the OP that caused you to suggest a log splitter?

haha... had to read it again...

No, But I wanted to build a log splitter for my senior project. I never did get the chance, as my company had another idea (I spent 11 years on my two degrees working full time, and didn't finish til I was 30).

I ended up designing a Hydraulic test bench to test various pumps instead (much, much more complicated than a simple splitter). The company benefited, and paid for everything (including my time spent on the project), so it was pretty hard to resist. I designed a integrated hydraulic manifold as the "heart" of the system, and was able to calculate hoop strengths, and spec in the materials and such to cover the "mechanical" requirements of the project. It worked out well, but I've always thought a log splitter was a perfect school project as it incorporates a little bit of everything learned in the Mechanical Engineering discipline.

Log splitter is a good suggestion, another would be a dump trailer. Heck, if you are ambitious you can do both!

My senior project back at University was to build a "go-cart" to be entered into a competition among several different state university engineering departments (Texas). The only constraints were the engine (5 Hp Briggs & Stratton), and a rough description of the final course over which the design would complete (including steep hill climb, fording a muddy draw, some hard pack for "high speed" trials, etc.). Ours was the only entry with an infinitely variable transmission coupled to a more conventional two-speed reversing transmission, independent 4 wheel suspension, and a fairly innovative framework that gave us a significant weight advantage. (My understanding is that future senior classes opted to "modify" our design rather than start from scratch for a couple of years afterwards).

A lot of fun, great team project, and the outcome of the inter-school competition determined the grade...

the elusive goal.... the infinitely variable transmission. or is this one of those secrets captured by the military? care to share pics or drawings?

The "infinitely variable transmission" is not an elusive goal, and has been around for many years (for mostly low-power applications, although there have been a couple of auto manufacturers experimenting with them). The one we used was a belt drive that used a centrifugal adjustment to the pulley plate separation, which resulted in changing the effective diameter of the pulley. I have also seen these used on air compressors, etc. Here's a link to the basic concept.

There can be 100s of projects based on individual interest,

Establishment of requirements, execution on requirements,And verification of requirements after completion, these all are the part of project, and shell be done by student himself to the best of his ability. This is beyond my understanding that why cant someone find a good project after reading tens of books and hundreds of chapters? One should be able to establish the project and project requirements based on what he learnt in past, If a student is unable to do so then I doubt that student is capable of executing project himself.
