Capacitor Placement Problem

07/22/2011 2:07 PM

Dear All,

Good day.

I would like to ask, how to solve any optimization problem for capacitor placement in distribution system to reduce the cost. If 11kv feeder information with v,i,pf,P,Q,and resistance in branch, for every feeder is available, how to solve min f function.

Need more information. Is this an industrial feeder to a plant that is being billed a penalty for power factor. If not tell me more about the 11 kv ckt. How log is it?

Do you have a study done that show KVA KVAR and KW?

Yes,

I done study and load flow analysis for IEEE 34 node system for distribution feeder in ETAP software. the ETAP result is avalable in word format which includes with all node and branch information interms of KVA,KW,PF, Loss etc.

Distribution research problem is how to define and solve objective function which is minimization of cost function.it includeds cost of capacitor+cost of reliability+peak powerloss (I square R loss).

So this is the problem which I need a solution from you.

Define your objective function , loss minimization, voltage improvement, economic operation etc.

Obtain a mathematical relation between your objective function and 1 MVAR capacitive power injection at various location.

Find out , for which location the objective function is most sensitive. This will be your best location for your capacitor, for the chosen operating objective.

You can also obtain sensitivities of all other variables you have specified with respect to this capacitor location and determine exact quantum of the compensation, respecting the necessary constraints.

Shall I use Matlab or suggest any other software which support my objective function?

You can use matlab, or any commercially available reactive power optimization software or simply load flow solution for various parameters with various ranges and tabulate the results. From these tabulations you can find your solution.
