2001 Sebring Gauge Lights

i have a 2001 sebring lxi that won't light the gauge cluster. i swapped out the light/ wiper unit. i still don't have gauge lights, but now when i turn the head lights on, the econo/compass/clock goes dead. it's in a seperated window from the gauges. ground wire? or something else.
