Bonding Soft PVC to Extruded, smooth aluminum

04/17/2007 11:40 PM

Hey guys,

I have a smooth, soft clear PCV product that I want to Lightly Bond to a finished, extruded, smooth aluminum part. I doesn't have to bond like epoxy, just hold in place fairly well. Actually, the channel is almost a perfect fit, so I just want to keep the PVC from coming out of the channel?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Try Vacuum, possibly with ionic scavenging.. which creates Super cleanliness, So that, 2 exceptionally clean (micro clean) sufaces , even dissimilar mat'ls will practically weld themselves together. Thats where i would start. An alternate experiment might be impact joining (explosive under water forming) this method can yield a joining pressure of extreme proportions, without destroying the parts. Pressures such as these can acheive a similtude of vacuum joining, at far less cost.

Is the pvc for cosmetic purposes or as a protective finish? Will it matter if the bond layer is seen? Could a thin double sided tape be used it will grab and cling to almost any surface. The only time it will give in is if parts are oily or if allowed prolonged exposure to high levels of UV (sun light).

Could a thin double sided tape be used it will grab and cling to almost any surface. Yes, it could be tacked that way

The only time it will give in is if parts are oily or if allowed prolonged exposure to high levels of UV (sun light).

This would be exposed to long time sunlight as it would mounted outside.

Depending on the strength of the bond, the size and the safety-criticality of the part:

  • Bath sealant
  • UHU
  • EvoStik Impact
  • Cyanoacrylate

work well in practice on small assemblies.

Cyanoacrylate,

Is this Chemical a solvent for soft PVC? If so, it might actually make the bottom melt some, and really fill in any small crevices that the naked eye cannot see, and this might work quite well.

Silicone (bathtub sealant). Define "Lightly"? A fully covering smear will hold a great deal, small dabs proportionally less.

We need more info about this situation. The application and the climate where it will be used. Will it be used in a humid atmosphere? What about the temperature. Will it be seen. Some more detail will give more refined information.

build in a mechanical lock. Any glue to PVC and aluminum will in time get separated

Not a bad idea, as the Sun will damage most anything, over time does anyone know if thin, say 1/32 inch clear Acrylic, comes in UV resistant type?

This is a very soft PVC product in strip form, that needs to be bonded to an extruded aluminum channel, and sometimes the channel may even be powder coated..

Will it be used in a humid atmosphere? YES, What about the temperature. 20F up to 115 F Will it be seen. YES, but not where the bond is

Some more detail will give more refined information.

I recommend a clear silicone sealant will bond the two together pretty good.

I'm not a salesman (as it may sound.) But I recently started using, and have been very impressed with an adhesive called "Plumbers Goop." It acts like a mixture betwean silicone and model airplane glue. I've secured similar material with great success inside of freezers. It has held up to the moisture, and extreme temperature fluxuation. With a little care I also removed one of the glued items without damaging the surfaces.

We,ve had great success with PL contact cement, the waterproof version. We bond both PVC & ABS to EVA foam. Our parts are floating in chlorinated water and seperation has not been an issue. You may want to give it a whirl.
