Strength of Lifting Member

07/25/2011 2:19 PM

Hi,

Among my engineering problems, I need to design a Lifting system for an Equipment / Machine having 60 kN of weight. There are 4 lifting points.

The members are to be in bolted construction.

Please Refer figure for arrangement.

The members are subjected to a spacial forces.

What is the design consideration / approximation to be adopted for solving this kind of problem?.

Could anyone please explain the design criteria for finding the strength of Members?.

Sling angles for sling loads is a start.

all the information you need is in the asic steel construction manuel. it's the "hand book" for any engineer in the steel construction and desisign industry. it contains all the information you need to know. it costs about $75.00.

the only unknown factor is the strength of the anchoring points. you "must" consult the manufacturer as to the correct installation unless it has been pre-designed and has been delivered with the anchors installed by the manufacturer. . this is the weakest point of your rigging.

Have you've asked your Professor/ Instructor what they're criteria is? And what are the special forces that have to be considered? Basic weight and balance calculations would get you going in the direction.

I believe some of the special forces handling loads factors, transportation limit load factors, if it is a mobile crane moving the load from one point to another, and also wind loads.

Get a copy of ASME B30.9 2003 SLINGS it is available for free on the internet
