Generator Engine Power

07/28/2011 3:49 PM

Hello,

I have question regarding the engine power of our 180kw CAT 3306B generator. When the motor (50Hp) transfer to delta (star-Delta Starter) the engine rpm or Hz drops to below 45Hz and exausted heavy black smoke, untill the motor run steady the engine rpm back to normal. normally the engine rpm drops 1Hz only. Engine HP = 272

Where is the problem is it the Turbocharger or Injector nozzle?

Could be one or more injector nozzles, the turbo charger, bad fuel, worn engine, clogged air filter, ect.

Is the gen-set still under warranty?

Can the dealer you purchased it from (assumed) suggest a competent diesel mechanic to diagnose the problem?

Has anything changed on the load end? More equipment, higher than usual load?

The Engine is an old one no warranty, they told me mechanic had it overhauled , but this engine was not working for nearly 2 years sometime after overhauled due to electrical problem on the Alternator. Its working now 50hr after alternator was repaired for now it is use for welding works and test motor on bansaw (40"). The Filters are new fuel are clean, so maybe its either injector nozzles, or turbocharger.

When diesel engine emits heavy black smoke, it means incomplete combustion due to lack of air, check your engine air inlet ,air filter , that is the first thing to do.

Check also that the engine is up to temperature before applying power. Low cylinder temperature will also cause incomplete combustion and black smoke.

Is this a new problem?. Was it running earlier without trouble?. Is it possible to start the motor without load and later apply load?.Check the engine as well as connections and contacts in the starter including "rolling" of phases. If nothing works try with a suitably rated capacitor across the starter only during starting.

When your engine labors the governor opens the fuel rack to allow more fuel to overcome the load. At this time if you do not have sufficient air you will get black smoke. You may have an indicator on the air intake that if working properly shows red when the air filter is restricted a preset amount. Also check intake hoses for collapsing and restricting air. If you have a turbocharger check it for wear and possibly take an intake pressure reading with a 0-60 pis or equivalent pressure gauge. Compare reading to specs. Several checks should be taken from start up to full warm up. What are the amps when under load , you can pull more amps than the engine can overcome. If all this checks out look for a plugged or partial plugged exhaust system.. Not common on Cat but frequent of Deutz Diesel.

I recall my one contractor some time ago using a 180 or 200kW motor to power a large fan with a 150kVA motor in a tunnel ventilation application. Usually, they had to overspeed the engine slightly before switching on the fan, as otherwise it would just belch some black smoke and die. The engine was not capable of sustaining the high power requirement during start-up. They eventually went for a larger engine - problem solved.3
