What Are The Beads Inside Of A Ramvac Air Compressor Tank Made Of?

07/30/2011 4:38 AM

Are they toxic? They sure smelled bad when I got them wet. Should I be scrubbing down like Karen Silkwood? (kidding. I think.)

RamVac makes dental products the beads are most likely a desiccant to dry the air. I would not think they would be toxic. Equipment is used to run the air drills the dentist use. Wouldn't think the would exhaust harmful gases into the close environment of a dentist office. If you got them wet then you need to replace them. Or you may be able to dehydrate them by heating. But you need to know what desiccant was used. I would replace them. Supposed to be replace annually.

But I would not think they would be in the tank. Usually in a cartridge that can be easily replaced.

There are around 18-20 drying agent available in the market like; Calcium Chloride (<20 Mesh), Calcium Oxide, Calcium Sulfate, Cupric Sulfate, Magnesium Sulfate, Phosphorous Pentoxide Silica Gel 6-16 Mesh; etc. Normally in industry for air drying Molecular Sieve Activated Type 3A, Silica Gel and Alumina are commonly used, I am not aware which one is used in your case. The Silica Gel and Alumina drying agent are rechargeable and in the industry always there are two bottles side by side, one is in use while the other is being dried by hot and dried air.

For more information go to Google and type "Air Drying Agents" and read

In general halogens (chlorides, bromides, etc) are carcinogenic (cause cancer). Also, many heavy metals (and several nonmetals) have a high toxicity. Always identify chemical substances and check chemical properties prior to any contact. Okiechemprof
