Hurricane Season: Who Has the Best Interpolation?

07/30/2011 5:06 PM

In the really old days of the 60's...hurricane landings were called within the last few hours only. I remember being let of school early because something called Betsy was heading inland.

Today, there are numerous stations and radars as well as sea bouys and planes.

* At 60 years old with a really bad case of vertigo, I'd still load up on meds and then strap in for a ride on one of those*

So, the question I ask is ; Does anyone know WHICH of the predicting agencies has the best overall track record for calling the shots?

NOGAPS

GFS

BAMM

etc. etc....

I'd go to NOAA Storm Prediction Center

Check it out.

I have been using NOAA for quite some time. They are pretty good at it. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/nhc_storms.shtml

I want to know if anyone has been keeping track on which of the individual parties have the better track record. NOAA may use its own "guess-estimators"......but what about the others?

There's a useful discussion of the various models and their track records here.

I have found that Irish Pubs have the best dartboards. They also have strong ale to fortify you before you return home to clean up the mess. After several pints, you'll be able to travel 4 sheets to the wind regardless of the Beaufort Scale.

English Pubs will do in a pinch, but you only if you drink gin neat.

....and are we talking Harp's, Guiness, Murphy, Smithwick or Beamish?

My Scotch/Irish Fishmate ( not firstmate) from Glascow felt the same way as the 60' Seiner lay so far over that the porthole in the galley was at sea level. Never knew the boat was even in a Force 10 Gale.......................

Good answer.

netmaker,

I hear you're getting a soaking from Lee down there. Hope you're not hit too bady.

They're having a lot of trouble predicting the track for Katia so far, partly because they don't have a clear forecast for Lee's final direction, and there's some interaction expected between the two. Seems like a busy season alright.

I found a useful collection of maps at :

http://tropics.hamweather.com and even more maps at

http://spaghettimodels.com

Got any favourite sites for weather modelling?

Hello Art,

Rain , rain and more rain. One big tree limb took out a portion of the truck but the house is fine.

I use StormPulse and the NOAA IRS3 anbd IRS4 sites to look at water temp and where the dry wind is ( always in a brown color).

This dang thing made a loop-d-loop in the Gulf and sat 50-40-30 miles from my back yard for 48 plus hours. I am scared to walk to the shop for fear of water soaked trees falling over.

Thank you for the sites..........

Yep - better to stay in until it stops blowing and raining!

Around here we have a lot of spruce and fir forest - very shallow rooted. The withstand 100 kph winds or more every winter no problem, but if you get high winds when the ground isn't frozen, look out! The bigger the canopy, the faster they go down. My place was trashed by Igor last year and then by a second storm, trees across the driveway etcetera. But luckily missed the car or the house. I'm sorry to hear about your truck.

I will check out the StormPulse and NOAA wind maps, thanks. Always good to learn about the weather....
