If You Had to Choose, Which Should Get Funded

07/30/2011 5:02 PM

Given the choice, which would you fund?

1. Symmetrical Tokamak (~30 billion, Nuclear Fusion Power Generator)(Link)

2. Turboencabulator (~2 billion, Inverse Reactive Current Supply) (Link)

3. Neither

Try to limit your answers to 1, 2 or 3 so we can get a clean vote.

My Choice

I would argue the Symmetrical Tokamak is the better investment, given the unlimited Electric Power we would have if it ever worked. We have to pay more up front but would get bigger results.

Why I'm Asking

In another thread Tornado suggested that the Turboencapulator will be the next to suffer from budget cuts. When will the Antiscience end?

If it were a bi-turboencabulator I'd go with that. It's faster isn't it? S.M.

Turbo is a bit passé, even in bi-form, and rather slow. I'd go for an ionicacceleratorencabulator, preferably in electric blue.

Guys, guys, nobody would like to see a functioning ionicacceleratorencabulator more than me, but we all know that nobody knows how to deal with the symmetric recoil asynchronicity (fakze's effect). Until that's figured out I thing we should stick to what's realistic.

You are being unfair. The ionicacceleratorencabulator displays neutral fakze's effect, not the hyper-positive fazke's effect you (and others) have suggested as a means for rationalizing its performance. Even a simple Googling of the phrase "what is "is"" will demonstrate that the ionicacceleratorencabulator is free of most, if not all, of the truncating ephemoralitities of the retroencabulator.

See, for example this: http://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1CHKW_enUS430US430&aq=f&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=what+is+%22is%22

They said Einstein would not be able to fly. But he proved them wrong. He showed us that, IN HIS TIME, airplanes actually existed and had been used to transport humans! We take it for granted now, but before his Theory of Relatives, "second cousin" was an unknown concept! The ionicacceleratorencabulator needs no funding; it is already running successfully. We merely need another Einstein to find it in the parking lot.

Re: If You Had to Choose, Which Should Get Funded

Look, this isn't even a debate anymore. The ionicacceleratorencabulator has been clearly shown to have hyper-positive fazke's effect. Just because a few studies funded by the Cabulator industry are saying the fakze's effect is neutral doesn't make it so.

I wish I was wrong. I wish the fakze effect was neutral. Then we could polarize the magnetocapacitor symmetrically without generating a catastrophic Lorentz cascade. Consider this official statement by the American Physical Society on ionicacceleratorencabulators:

"Who the hell are you....security!!...get this guy out of here....what was he asking about, an ion accelerator?"

As you can see, the largest organization of physicists in the world, APS, is quite clear on this. The Fakze effect is hyper-positive.

(spellcheck just had a stroke checking this post)

Re: If You Had to Choose, Which Should Get Funded

The American Psychological Society does not consider the catastrophic Lorentz cascade a real phenomena: you will not find it in the diagnostic manual. One APS can be no more valid than another APS -- for obvious reasons.

Frankly, I think you are rationalizing. I want to deal with this sensitively, so let me say that I have my own issues with the relative sizes of the Tokamak (a name which is wrapped up in controversy regarding its possible derivations from two (2) different Russian phrases) and the ionicacceleratorencabulator. Size matters.

Shape is important too. It is painfully obvious that the toroidal shape of the Tokamak is suggestive: it cannot be viewed without seeing its feminine aspect. I feel the need to apologize to women for the shape of the Tokamak, even though I had nothing to do with its design.

For thinking men everywhere, it is obvious that the ionicacceleratorencabulator is better as a concept because its descriptor has more letters, and because it does not so actively and egregiously submit women to further pain by ridiculing the very shape of their bodily parts.

You make good points, plus watching that video you linked to has basically produced the same effect on me as the Arc of the Covenant on the Nazis at the end of the first Indian Jones movie.

(Hysterical Irony Note: Not only do no women appear in the video, but apparently , according to the credits at the end of the video, no women were involved in the making of the video. So apparently the message is "Men are the source of everything evil in the world and have a history of oppressing woman. Men need to treat women as equals and only men can tell you this")

There is a Will Ferrell parody of the video, and then a parody of the parody, by Arjuna Ardagh, the goateed guy in the original.

The Consciousmen website talks about worshipping women, another irony, if the intent is to treat women as equals.

I apologize deeply and synchrogenistically for having not mentioned the existence of the Will Ferrell parody and the parody of the parody until my post #49. I apologize as a proxy for you, (which I can do because we are the same gender) for your inability to see that I had already mentioned the parody and parody of the parody in that post... which precedes the your post for which I am currently apologizing.

You should apologize, as a proxy for me, to me for my not being a woman. Let me say that we, you and I and all sentient beings, are deeply sorry.

OMG, I am so sorry! I should have apologized, in the paragraph above, to rocks (unfairly characterized as non-sentient beings) too. I trust that you feel sorry for my failure.

I apologize deeply for not marking this post off-topic.

Thanks a lot, K!

I could have gone on my merry way for the remainder of my days without having ever even paused to think about all the outrageous cr*p you men do to us women physically, symbolically, emotionally, spiritually, etc, and continued, in the grand scheme of things, to remain in a pretty darn good mood.

Your single post has forever changed my view, and ruined my good mood for the forseeable future.

I didn't accept the apology, moreover, watching this video really irked, nay, p*ssed me the h*ll off!

Now, my poor husband must bear the brunt of it, being a man and all.

He says thanks, too.

Now, my poor husband must bear the brunt of it, being a man and all.
That is good and appropriate. My advice is to really let him have it. (I should clarify that, but won't.)

Your husband is one of us. According the the logic of the video (the original Dear Woman) he must be responsible for god knows how many rapes, murders, body part mutilations, etc, because we men are apologizing for those things -- and must have done them when we time traveled after having too much to drink. It is likely, for instance, that your husband started one of those oppressive religions. Last week, he might have denied this whole time travel idea as being preposterous. But now, taking the lead of our brethren (loony though they may be from too much California sun and what-the-fuh kinda drugs) he realizes that he is responsible for these atrocities and is probably a Nazi, too.

I plan to prepare a new video, "Dear Person." In it, women will apologize for the atrocities that men have committed, because they are persons. "Dear Person, we stand before you today as people committed to becoming more conscious, in every way. We feel deep love, great respect, and a growing sense of worship for the gifts of the human. We also feel deep sorrow for the actions of the unconscious human of the past and present. We want to apologize and make amends for those actions today, so that we can move together into a new era of co-creation." This video project is not moving along all that quickly, because the sappy music and pretentious wording make me a little sick, but I hope to be able to persevere.

I wonder what all these consciousmen guys are really up to. I suspect, now that they have apologized for all sorts of atrocities, they are planning to commit the same. They probably think they missed out on all the fun, and think that if they apologize, then they can then go ahead and rape and pillage. Afterwards they'll say "Hey, we said we're sorry."

SPLARF!

And what about the rest of the earth's living creatures?

"Dear Wombat". "Dear Skunk", "Dear Deer"?

And the insect world! How many innocent lives were ruined? Vertabrate and invertabrate alike should have their apologies posted on U-2be! Why the poor, lowly earthworm alone is good for another tirade or two!

As for the schlubs who created this obscenity, all I can say is "aptly named". It really does explain a lot!

OK - it goes deeper than the slip that the worthy Mrs. R. noted:

  • In the OP - we have reference to both turboencabulator and turboencapulator.
  • The 2nd variant was skillfully identified and commented on by kvsridhar at #34
  • There is a 3rd variant, turboencapsulator, introduced by The Engineer at #78
  • The turboencapulator returns to haunt us at #87, which is where the aforementioned bunny-girl became so incensed.

This device is clearly capable of self-transmutation - and possibly of the legendary MindMeld - thereby giving each of us a different interpretation and expectation of itself.

Let us all be very afraid. And invest bigtime, in order to ingratiate ourselves.

Not only is the Turboencabulator green, it's also is an innovative paradigm shift. It's the physical manifestation of the zeitgeist. It is anything and everything that we want it to be.

It is a democracy with the efficiency of a totalitarian government. It's Social Security, Medicare, and Veteran Benefits without taxation. It's scientific progress without scientific investment. It's cheap products from Walmart without a trade deficit. It's a strong dollar with strong exports.

It's the smooth drag of a cigarette without the risk of heart disease or cancer. It's an ice cold Heineken without the hangover. It's being smart without picking up a book. It's downing an chocolate milk shake in seconds flat without an ice cream headache. It's flying cars and personal robots. It's kittens and puppies that never grow up. It's a quadrupole rainbow. It's (censored). In other words, it's great.

When God prays, it's to the Turboencabulator.

The bi-turboencabulator is the Turboencabulator2

The ionicacceleratorencabulator is the bi-turboencabulator

Erratum

I meant to write "quadruple rainbow" but mistakenly wrote "quadrupole rainbow" instead. Upon review I think this was a fortuitous mistake because I'm pretty sure a quadrupole rainbow is probably the cooler rainbow.

I believe the word you want is quadrapole rainbow. The conventional rainbow has just two poles: the end with the pot of gold (considered positive) and the end with the pile of bills (considered negative). The quadrapole includes additional poles for the elements of fire (considered fiery) and wind (considered windy).

I completely agree. The idea of a rainbow with 4 posts of gold instead of the normal 2 is awesome (or is it 3 instead of 1?).

A week away and I've missed all the fun and deeply technical discussions in which you guys have indulged these last few days, not that I could have added anything of any import. But the staggering results of many decades of very deep thought and exhaustive research are superbly summarized here in just a few short paragraphs. Awesome!

Who's $30 billion am I spending for choice #1?

the link indicates the buy in is 9%

assuming we aren't covering for the European's nut our bill is only 2 billion

it should go really fast, if it turns left we can probably defer come of the costs with a NASCAR cup series campaign

Ummmmmmm,

Should the US up it's 9% stake in 1) Which is now a % of €16 billion (and rising) for 1000 seconds of power...

Or

Invest in wholly American innovation ...

Tricky question Roger.

Maybe in 2), as cutting the present budget of €0.00, would, on paper, result in 'negative expenditure' of 2 billion, so produce a positive national budget outcome.

In fact if you cut 2) enough, you could probably neutralize the national debt.

And you'd have antiscience to thank for that

#4. EMC^2 Pollywell Fusion

EMC2 FUSION

They only need pennies compared to the other politically entrenched black-hole money pit systems to prove if the concept works large scale and do it in months, not decades.

In fact, they already have made significant strides in proving their concept.

They need $10 million to finish proving the concept. $200 million to build the first full-scale 100 MW fusion power plant.

...or if it even exists. As a matter of fact, in the interest of operating efficiency, the latest iteration of the Turboencabulator has no moving parts.

However, the Symmetrical Tokamak has no parts at all.

It's a difficult choice.

i vote (4) Both.

All you need is to send me the money (bank details will be sent as soon your irrevocable letter of credit is opened).

Becuse i have both the Tokamak and the Encabulator (in fact both the Ford and the Rockwell ones, and one of my own design which, i humbly submit, out-bull$hits them both by miles)

So, sit back, relax and enjoy your money being used in the magnificent science of Economics...which is moving money from place to place until it disappears.

Definitely NOT number 2.

Why?

Because in some hidden government program somewhere they are probably funding it already, and if the program isn't canceled the funding will continue and the money will keep disappearing.

I have fantasized in the past about including a funding category check-off on IRS 1040 forms. If you want your taxes to go for war, check "military"; for social programs, check "welfare"; for R&D, check "science"; if you don't know, check "blank check"; etc. (This is not one of my more practical ideas, I suspect.)

how about a checkbox for sending your money directly to the member of congress/parliament? at least that way groups of citizens could compete with big business for buying the most political influence in the house.

I really like this idea, and have given you a good answer vote -- in the hopes that by doing so, your answer will be more likely to attract attention at the highest levels of government. (It is rumored tha Obama, as just one example, pays attention only to good answers.)

This would give the "voting" populace a means of having their vote really count. It would revolutionize democracy by enabling elected officials to go about their business more openly and without having to pretend to feel guilt when caught. Productivity would go up: instead of spending 20% of their time doing stuff, and 80% sneaking around, they could spend 30% of their time doing stuff, and 70% sneaking around. That is a 50% increase in time spent doing stuff!

I wonder if there could be some leveraging and cost savings from providing "in kind" gifts to elected officials. Perhaps a large escort agency, for example, could offer a substantial discount to the IRS. The 1040 instruction would read something like this: "If you have checked line 35a, then check 37b if you would like your gift to delivered in the form of hooker time. This option can nearly double the value of your contribution, due to the impressive industry connections and buying power of the IRS." (The details would need to be tweaked a little for the Canadian market.)

Certain policy issues could be more easily and openly handled in a similar way:

we could have money directed to taking care of illegitmate offspring..

and support the purchase of high resolution ipod cameras with special penis enlargment software built in, for the discriminating congressman...

online and telephone voting is a huge industry for television... I'm really surprised we dont' have 6 week political careers with viewers voting people off the island floor of the house. and a vote based countdown to the one remaining candidate... and call that person the president... it would be so much easier than all that huckstering that goes on now.

I'm pretty sure it is coming... I wonder if the Romans really invented Survivor with the advent of Gladiatorial Combat.

While driving on the freeway yesterday, G and I got a wonderful idea. An "A-hole tax" automatically charged to idiot drivers. You know, the tourist who sees a cow in a pasture while driving down the freeway, and has to slow down to enjoy the view. The guy who rents an RV three sizes bigger than his driving ability can handle, so he goes 30 on the highway and all but stops dead when he goes around a curve! The driver who holds up an entire 10 mile stretch of highway because he refuses to use a turn-out!

We would not only fund more turboencabulatirs, but we'd balance the budget, get out of debt, and have enough over to buy a small sovereign nation or two!

I think I may have talked about this scheme on Ed's

sell the highways extravaganza

commuter lane tax coupled with a inverse length of trip multiplier

the longer the trip the lower the toll for being in the left lane

example

the yahoo who darts in front of you cuts across 4 lanes to settle into the commuter lane for a 1/2 mile, only veer right [all you Europeans substitute left] back across 4 lanes to exit, the fee $50

the driver who merges gradually to the center, drives a few 100 miles & exits , fee 50¢

Re: If You Had to Choose, Which Should Get Funded

A bit of history for you, Roger. Many, many years ago, there were, in the US, two competing technologies for fusion funding. This may have been as long ago as the 1960's- maybe a bit later. I don't even remember the name of the competing system. There was a major discussion in the technical literature about the potential of the two approaches, and, from my youthful (and limited technical knowledge at the time) perspective, the loser actually sounded like it offered the better potential for achieving a sustained fusion reaction. Tokamak won. Why? Because this was at the height of the Cold War, and everyone in the West, after Sputnik, was really, really concerned about the Russians beating us again. No matter that the claims of the Russian team were considered even spurious back then (and never reproduced)- no one would ever suspect the Russians of publishing unreproducible Science for propaganda purposes, now would they?

As much as we all would like to see sustained fusion as a power source, I don't think more funding is going to ever get Tokamak to the point promised by the early Russian work.

I vote 3. None of the above.

Yeah, the hopelessness of Fusion power seems to be one of those persistent myths the public has. ITER will produce a functioning Fusion Reactor (in it's timeline) and the world will move forward from there.

Every year all kinds of discoveries are made in plasma physics that make Fusion more and more inevitable. These discoveries would happen more quickly if we actually invested seriously in it, but unfortunately the public prejudice (ignorance) regarding Fusion power is too strong to overcome to get funding.

oh now I get it...

I was still confused about the difference between the magnetocarburetor and the magnetoencabulator... except that the obviously male oriented magnetocarburetor puts fluids down the throat of the hi rise tunnel-ram intake manifold, while the magnetoencabulator is more multidifferous.

I'll have to mark myself ot of course.

I'm adding multidifferous to my vocabulary. I'm going to see how many times I can use it at work without getting called out on it.

um.......hmmmmm....

I'm not sure you're getting the joke. Or maybe I'm not getting your joke.

Maybe if you wrote Roger + n = nonsense, then I could be like "I see what he did there, he's saying Roger=No Sense, very clever", but you lost me with your equation.

Are you saying that I don't have a multiplicative identity?, or merely that it isn't 1?Because I'd hate to think you were indirectly suggesting I don't have an inverse, that would just be mean.

hmmm....you may be right. This might help:

Jabberwocky

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought--
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! and through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

I would fund the Tokamak. It is the most promising technology for harnessing nuclear fusion. If we do now acquire the technology then we will be buying our "Tokamak" from China in twenty years. The US must remain a technology leader or our economy is destined to further decline.

go ahead and fund it if you have a few billion laying around. or do you think the taxpayers should shoulder the burden?

4. Low Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENR),(formerly "cold fusion").

This is going to work, eventually. A factory is being built in Greece right now that is SUPPOSED to build furnaces for homes, based on a nickle-to-copper fusion process. Even if this model doesn't work, some refinement on LENR will. The R&D cost will be like the cost of the coffee breaks at LLNL (site of the Tokamuk).

{1} with reservations...

It seems it would be more logical to build a mini-Tokamak in outer space where there is no gravity, thereby reducing the energy input needed for magnetic plasma containment down to a mininum.

We could just load it into the Space Shuttle and....oh, wait a minute...never mind.

We should bring back the Sen. William Proxmire Fickle Finger of Fate Golden Fleece Award for projects that should be defunded.
