DG Set in Quarry (Stone Crusher)

08/01/2011 6:55 AM

Sir,

I came to know that the dust in quarry affects the DG set performance even though there is filter in the DG set.Can anybody tell me measures to avoid the effect of dust in DG set.

The basic thing is to keep the dust away from the DG set, or get the DG set away from the dust.

Is there any practical chance of that? Locating it reasonably nearby the quarry but maybe upwind of the prevailing winds? Or build an enclosure around it with more and better filters?

I assume the problem is not just dust in the air intake to the diesel engine, but also abrasive (and heat insulating) dust building up in all sorts of locations?

Regular cleaning should help. If particular bearings are a problem, you might set up a (clean air) purge for those.

DG Set alternators are generally protected to only IP 20 Degree of Protection. As such. dust would surely enter and affect the performance of the set. Alternative is to go for an IP 5X or IP 6X Degree of Proection, but then heat dissipation would eb a problem. Forced cooling may be required.

Sir,

Can you please tell me what is IP 20 DEGREE , IP 5X, IP 6x protection.

Can we use a air filter before the air inlet of DG set to prevent the dust affecting the radiator?

Pl. mail me your mail ID thro this forum's mailbox so that I can send you soem write-up on IP protection.

Well, you may use an air filter at the air inlet, but would that not restrict the cooling air flow?

Stone dust, wonderful stuff, even better when it gets damp! The only real answer is to move the generator.

OK it will need a larger CSA cable to compensate the distance. But look at the cost of down time, repairs, etc.

Dust environment means more costly...you need heavy duty type of air filter or many timeas to change the air filter, often getting overheat because radiator core were blocked by dust, alternator often got over heat AVR must work harder.....bad environment, more costly...its the risk

If u are using a open set then alternator can get affected as degree of protection is only IP22 .The room in which set is located (If there is One) can be made dust free .In India it is mandatory that sets out door should be in a canopy. So it is possible to limit the pollution. In such locations unless u have a permanent room which is normally not done it is difficult. However with proper maintenance it is possible to minimize effects of dust.Filters if used will have to be cleaned frequently.IP 55 alternators become special and expensive and delivery is not of the shelf

Sir,

Can anybody please tell me the points to be considered while installing a DG set in stone crushing application? What are the chances for DG set to get affected by dust? Example : when the door is opened for a long time, when the DG set is placed such that the dusty air from the crushing zone is sucked by the DG set radiator, so we can place the DG set such that the radiatior of DG set is not facing the crusher. Can you add some more points like the above two examples?
