I don't think you can do it.

If you give other people access to your wireless access, you can't restrict them from downloading.......hogging bandwidth.

The only way to do it would be to password secure the wireless network, and nobody would be able to log on without your password. Once on, they would still be able to download though.

By wired internet do you mean hard wired. If a network assign them as users only. If not then you can create one that they have to log into to gain access to the internet. You as Administrator can assign levels of use.

On a Windows machine you can utilize the Active Directory features on a server and the profile settings for individual workstations/PC's.

When you say you don't want the others to access your internet do you mean that you do not want others to have the ability to see what you are doing?

Do you want others to only be able to browse the net but not download separately, i.e., save material from a web site outside of the browser's cache?

Hello, This is my first post, although I've been lurking for forever. My recommendation, depending on funds of course, would be to run a gateway server using untangle as an OS. You'd need a server with 2 network cards to do this, but that's what I would use. Regards, Jarred

Simple answer, no.

Long answer, with lots of work from you.

If its your kids computer, set them at user and not admin so they can't install software without your approval. Install parental control software in their computer and block download sites.

If its your roommate or renter then you'll need to setup a server to control internet traffic and block them on the server.

Simple answer, actually yes...using the active directory controls built into XP. An administrator/owner does not need aftermarket products.

A user can set up an XP machine with one account as the administrator and all of the other accounts to run in kiosk mode. In kiosk mode the computer is completely locked to make it safe to run and controls what anyone can do on the computer.

Steady state (also free from MS) is the surefire way to stop people from screwing up the machine by running a system sandbox where one would need the administrator's password to save any changes during a session.

It's really not that hard.

If the offender is wired to a fixed port, you can interpose an inexpensive consumer-grade router that will place his/her computer on its own LAN, and will enable you to block the URL's that are the source of the problem. Download a user guide for some router you might buy, to see how difficult (or easy) this will be. This instruction manual for the D-Link EBR-2310 http://www.dlink.com/products/?tab=3&pid=EBR-2310&rev=EBR-2310_revB may give you some idea of the possibilities and the challenges. Good luck.

If the problem is them hogging your bandwidth, you could try installing a bandwidth limiter. This way they would still be able to download files but at a set rate, keeping them from disrupting your internet connection.

A bandwidth limitation control is built into Windows. It's activated through AD controls and quota management.

If you have an old PC with two network cards you can use ClearOS to make it into a router. ClearOS has the capability of restricting traffic and bandwidth by identifying the machines by MAC address. You can restrict to just one machine or many.
I use this for just the reasons you describe. I can allow a neighbor to connect, but can then limit them to only so much bandwidth/time etc.

If they already have a router, the controls are available in that router without utilizing another PC and another OS they would have to install and configure.
