95 BUICK Regal lse

08/05/2011 2:55 AM

When I brake I begin to hear a noise like air is escaping or as if someone is breathing through a resperator, I don't believe the brakes are scratching as I would know what that sounds like is this some kind of malfunction or is air trapped somewhere in the braking system. What could be causing this air breathing noise to happen every time I brake?

Are your brakes working fine?

What you're probably hearing is your brake booster. It's the round thing on the drivers side firewall behind the master cylinder. The vacuum assist causes that sound.

Even if your brakes are working fine, check your brake fluid and pads. Low fluid or worn pads can cause excessive travel on the pedal, which can exacerbate the breathing sound.

sounds as tho u have picked up something foriegn. have u pulled the wheels and looked? thats not air in the system r your brakes would feel funny, sounds like u need to pull the tire that's making the noise.it may be your brake booster. the diaphram is busted inside. you will have to replace the booster. that's what it sound like to me

Sounds like the Break Booster to me.

The break booster uses a vacuum to give some extra force when applying the breaks. Occasionally a vacuum line, or the booster itself can leak, causing a sound of rushing air when applying the breaks. This lack of seal can also cause the crankcase pressure in the engine to change suddenly when the valve opens the pathway from engine to booster, you may notice a very small, almost not noticeable change in the engine at idle speed when you apply the breaks. I can't remember if the RPM's will fall or rise due to the increased pressure inside the block, but I'd wager it will change a touch, which could be an easy quick test to help you get pointed in the right direction.

Otherwise, it's always a good idea to inspect your tires and break system as it's the single most important system in the vehicle, and your life depends on it.

Drops RPM. Sounds like he needs a squirt bottle of soapy water to spray around the vacuum lines. My guess is the main fitting at the booster.

I would venture to say the same. There are typically 3 places that could leak on the brake booster: the main vacuum line coming off the booster (typically a hard plastic fitting with a hose going to the engine and penetrating a grommet in the booster), the front seal where the master cylinder bolts, and at the firewall connection. I will venture to say that if it is very noticeable with the windows up then it is leaking at the firewall side of the booster. If it is the booster itself, replace it with a new one and don't try a used one. If it is the main hose/grommet/fitting, just replace that part. Best way to tell is put the car in park, engine running, ear down next to the break pedal and apply the brakes. If it sounds like it is right there, go directly to the parts store and order a new one, if you are mechanically inclined and up for DIY, otherwise take it to a shop and have them replace it.

If you can here the noise only when you step on the pedal, it is the brake pedal push rod where it enters the booster. Most boosters have only a thick felt washer that allows the rod to slide freely, but does not really seal it too well. The welt washer is retained by a rubber boot. But I have never seen any felt washer sets sold alone. You are going to have to suck it up and buy a rebuilt or new booster. Not a tough job on most cars. Many are now sold with a master cylinder attached, and make the job easier to do, because the sensitive booster to master push rod is set for you. Good luck.
