Whats Wrong with my 1990 Buick Century?

08/04/2011 5:57 PM

i have a 1990 buick century custom 2.2 liter. you can start the vehecle and it runs good till it reach normal operating temp. then it shuts down and i have to wait till the next day to start it. i have replaced the fuel pump.fuel filter.oil pressure sensor, ignition module, coil packs, oxgen sensor, temp sensor, cranckshaft position sensor and it still does the same thing. nithing comes up when i read the computer but code 12 which means no codes found. ihave looked for the fuel pump relay and can't find it. when i checked the vehecle after it cut off it have no fire from the spark plug and cuts off the injecter. the fuel pump still pump still puts the pressure to the injecter, but the injecter don't pump. i am at wits end. have anybody run across this problem. where is the fuel pump relay.

Have you checked the 710 cap? Oh, never mind.

So, the fuel pump, fuel filter, oil pressure sensor, ignition module, coil packs, oxygen sensor, temp sensor, and crankshaft position sensor. And now the fuel pump relay. At this rate, you will soon have a new 21 year old car.

Slow down, explain in more detail some more symptoms, and we might be able to help you. At the very least, stop replacing stuff at random.

that all the symptons the vehecle runs good till normal operating temp, then it dies. i can't startit till the next day. i say normal operating temp it will run good for about 5 maybr 10 min then it dies and won't start till the next day. i was thinking something maybe getting hot and shutting it down. after it dies i checked for fire at the coilpacks and there was none, ialso checked the fuel pressure it was 47 lbs. the injector don't spray fuel into the throttle body. whatever causesit to die it cuts off the injector and the fire thats why i though it was the fuel pump relay. idon't know of anything else to check.

In your 1st post you changed the "temp sensor". What exactly does that mean, which exact sensor? If you changed the sending unit to the gauge on your dash that wont get it. There's a sensor that sends a signal to the engine management computer. This sensors main function is to tell the computer how rich or lean of a mixture to deliver to the engine. So when the engine is cold it sends a rich mixture, as the engine heats up it slowly leans it out. Usually when these go bad the engine starts okay but runs sluggish at normal operating temperature. You don't really seem to have that problem.

Also with the engine cold, turn the key to on and check how much voltage you have at the TPS, (when closed in the idle position) it should be very close to .55VDC. If it isn't loosen the screws and see if you can get the .55. DON'T just buy a new one until you test the function and confirm it works or not. When you fully open the throttle plate you should have 4.5+ volts.

Next time it happens, get some canned air, or better yet, some of the stuff in a can for freezing warts. Find and chill your electronic components under the hood one at a time and try to start. Whatever it is, is probably electronic, and it's happening because of expansion due to heat. If you chill something and the car starts, you have found the problem.

I can't guarantee that this will identify the culprit, but it does work, and it's a lot cheaper than replacing one part at a time.

If you have really replaced all the components you mention, and you have not improved anything, I suggest that you have it towed to a competent repair facility and have a professional mechanic/technician fix it.

Have you replaced the fuel pump relay?

Is yours the gold 4 door with the 2 missing hub caps? I might have accidentally dropped my plastic sandwich bags into your fuel tank. It was an accident. Sorry.

Or, someone might have connected the ignition power supply to the temperature sending unit.
