Chlorine

08/08/2011 8:29 AM

I understand that chlorine is non-volatile, but mixed with turpentine it becomes explosive. How much turpentine do you need to fully burn up a quantity of chlorine and what would be the calorific value of combustion?

This would fall under the "Bad Idea" category.

Not only could you injure or kill yourself, you could also injure or kill innocent people nearby.

Why not find something less lethal to play with.

Very tiring. Three days is too long for an old man. The boys liked it, mostly. The 12 YO got some bad food and was out of commission for an afternoon. The 5 & 6 YO both had fun. Got to ride everything they wanted to so I guess it was good.

At least they have alcohol there.

I did Disney World about 5 years ago with my wife's family. I definitely didn't get home feeling rested....................and I'm not that old. It's work getting through those places. Plus I don't like any rides, but was coerced into going on them.

It takes 28 moles of chlorine to react with one mole of alpha-pinene. The products will probably be tetrachloromethane, which is an anaesthetic, and hydrogen chloride, wiich is water-seeking and, when dissolved in it, highly acidic and therefore corrosive. If the reaction is exothermic as assumed above, then these products can be expected in the vapour space.

Please make sure all CR4 readers retire to a safe distance before carrying out the reaction....

This posting demonstrates lack of basic information. Chlorine is in fact highly volatile, so we are starting with a disconnect with reality. Something is wrong, missing, improperly connected, or misstated. "Burning" usually is used to refer to a reaction with oxygen, so "fully burn" usually leads to environmentally stable end products. As has been stated above, the supposed end products are not environmentally stable. This question should be restated with errors corrected.

Sounds like good clean fun. So can you record it and post the outcome on Youtube?

1st, not going there. 2nd answering this type of question is going no where as well. Let these types of question dissolve into thin air, not worth the time or effort.
