Surge Protection/Lightning Protection for VFD's

08/09/2011 7:43 PM

A plant's electric load of VFD is +95%

Surge protection/lightning protection is required. These are 3 phase VFDs therefore +95% of the loads are three phase. The decision was made to make the system a 3 phase 3 wire based on this fact.

How can you utilize SPD/TVSS that work in this system voltage configuration?

The literature i have explored on SPD and TVSS from Square D point out that a solidly grounded system is a must to use this equipment. Is that true for all SPD/TVSS devices?

If there is no alternative but to make the system solidly grounded to accommodate for SPD/TVSS what are the pros and cons of making this change?

Have you looked at total protection solutions? This data sheet shows 3 -wire Delta systems with ground. http://www.tpssurge.com/st-series/st400-tps.pdf

I assume you have a ground. You don't need a neutral leg just a solid ground.

The guys at Technicon can help you get the unit you need.

you are correct. There is a ground.

I will read your references.

thanks!

Yes.. or it doesn't work!
