Purchase of Silent DG Set

08/10/2011 9:29 AM

Dear Expert,

We are looking for silent DG set for our company.

We want to run following equipments.

Computers : 35 (LCD 19")

Fan : 8 Fans

CFL : 10 CFL of 20Watt

We have contacted some DG set vendor, but we are not getting provider advice. Some suggest 10KVA, Some suggest 5KVA or Some Suggest 25-30 KVA.

We are really confused which one to go with.

I would really appreciate your advice on...

1. How much KVA we would require?

2. What is the best fuel efficient and eco friendly DG set and which company?

Thank you all.

Sincerely,

Bhavin Mistry

Is this for a call centre? If it is try a pushbike linked to a dynamo.

I bank in Britain, I don't want my business conducted in Asia!

Hello Bhavin,

It may not be a good practice to suggest specific vendor names for specific requirements on a knowledge sharing internet forum such as this. It is not a good practice to ask either.

Do you have a good electrical consultant for your premises? You should.

Manufacturers or suppliers, though qualified to understand you need, have a larger priority to sell their merchandise so it may not be possible to get an unbiased opinion from them.

A good consultant will help you deal with issues such as seen in some questions now put to you.

Is your DG set intended to be a short duration standby to cater to part loads only?

Or will you run your full load for a long duration like a full shift?

How critical is your load (work)? Is it a real-time, on-line service business application?

The premises that you occupy for such a small business may be less than 120sqm. Do you have permission and space for storing Diesel?

The lighting of the space may be inadequate if only 200 watts is provided for a space holding 35 computers - however the architect should know best and the lighting consultant may know enough.

In a small premises with only 8 fans (which only circulate air) and 10 lamps and 35 computers (and hence about 40 persons), how will you handle the heat load and temperature rise (presumably you are in a tropical climate area with adverse summers)?

There are many more questions that come to mind, but maybe this is not the best time and place.

It will be our pleasure to help you with solutions if you wish.

Dear Soeb,
Thanks for your reply.
With refernece to your questions, please find my answe as below.
1. We don't have electical consultant. 2. Regarding usability of DG set, it would be around 50 hours per month with full-load. We have a 3 Phase connection in our premises but due to power cut issue we need a back up. The power cut last 15 mins to 8 hours in a day sometimes.
3. We need a continous power supply atleast 12 hours per day. As we are providing online services to our client. We can bear 1 hour power cut per day but not more than that.
4. We have our office on top-floor so we can use terrace to install DG set. Our premise size is about 1500 SQFT.
5.To manage the heat, we have Air conditioners. But I am not planning to run ACs on DG set.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks & Best Regards,
Bhavin

Thanks Bhavin.

The lighting will be below average (that is not the subject of the thread) and therefore ergonomically unsuitable.

The air-conditioning not running for full shifts of over 8 hours as desired by you when you wish to use the office on DG is not ergonomically conducive to productivity and also may result in failure of computers (that is not the subject of the thread either).

You will need a DG set of 30kW plus a 15kW UPS with Battery Backup for 15 minutes in which time you will have to start your DG set - OR a DG set of 5kW plus a 15kW UPS with Battery Backup for 15 hours. Other experts may suggest lower capacity sets however I maintain my recommendation as best for the long term.

Considering the nature of your business some redundancy may be required but that will not be an engineering decision.

To improve on this advice and make it cost effective a detailed study is required and you should engage a good consultant on mutually agreeable commercial terms. A good consultant's fee comes as a payback through savings in costs and reliability of the system and should be looked as a wise capital investment.
