LED Light vs. Compact Fluorescent Light

08/10/2011 9:54 AM

Hello,

I just need to ask please about the following:

Fluorescent lights are known to have the best efficacy among the other lighting sources (around 70 Lumens/W), while LEDs are known to have an efficacy of 30 Lumens/W. How comes that in this case I always find in websites the following:" LEDs are more power efficient than fluorescent lights."? I would rather say that fluorescent lights are more efficient (power consumption wise) since we need more Watts to achieve the same Lumens as in Fluorescent lighting fixtures.

Thank you for clarifying this issue.

LED's are quickly advancing in the lumen/watt category. According to a press release from Cree, a maker of lighting class LED's:

Continued Innovation Results in Lamp that Delivers More than 1,300 Lumens at 152 Lumens Per Watt
So, LED's are exceeding CFL's in this aspect. The biggest hurdle now to wider adoption is cost.

P.S. I have no ties to Cree, I just follow their products, as I am interested in adopting LED lighting. There are many others out there making similar advances.

You are correct that fluorescent lights have high luminous efficacy, although not the best (that achievement belongs to discharge lamps such as high pressure sodium). Considering the overall efficiency of a light source in delivering radiance to the intended target, LED systems have much lower energy consumption. There are two main reasons for this effect:

  1. LED sources produce very little heat compared to fluorescents. That heat is 100% wasted energy.
  2. Fluorescent tubes radiate in a uniform 360° pattern, including directions away from the area to be lighted. LED's are hemispherical on a flat backplane, so their light output is more directed. A much larger percentage of the luminous radiation produced by an LED actually illuminates the target area.

My utility is now performing a side-by-side comparison of LED and high pressure sodium streetlights using revenue grade certified meters. Over the last 75 days the LED fixture consumed 23.6% of the energy used by the HPS fixture (72 vs 313 kWh). In addition, the LED produces a cleaner, whiter, more eye-friendly light, which means that fewer candlepower are required at ground level to achieve the same visual acuity.

And now the flip side...the HPS setup consumed 23.6% of the money consumed by the LED setup?

You are being generous to say HPS setup consumed 23.6% of the money.
