Isolated Mode and Islanding Mode

08/12/2011 4:26 AM

Hi,

Is there any difference between isolated mode and islanding mode on hydroelectric generating stations?

Regards,

sks

In broad sense there is no difference between 'isolated mode' and 'islanding mode'.

When a group of generators run in parallel to supply the loads without connecting the grid system, it is said that the generators are running in islanding or islanded mode - just like they are running in an isolated island. When the islanding mode refers to only one generator, it is called isolated mode. However, these two terms are used synonymously with more common use of islanding or islanded mode.

I have been across papers and literatures that do not differentiate between two

eg isolated mode as well as islanding mode has single or multiple generators.

The important part is only that it is not connected to the grid.

However there are some interesting questions now- what is a grid, with how many generators interconnected we will call it a grid? and so on.

The only aspect is the theoritical infinite size of the grid. Which does not exist in the microgrid (which are islandable).
