Circuit Element Very Delicate For Surge Current

08/14/2011 8:28 AM

Given a Circuit board with elements like resistors, Capacitors, Diodes, Microchip, inductor, transistors & transformers) which do you think is more to be blown first by a surge?

According to Murphy's Law, a $100 component will blow up to protect a 10¢ fuse.

Like the famous HR Dictum that:

People who put in 20% work earn 80% of the salary disbursals

and

people who put in 80% work earn (share) the balance 20% salary disbursals

Something like that ... but that's the Pareto principle working as per Murphy's law ! The closest thing to perfection in life

Go back to your teacher and ask them what kind of surge? Voltage or Current?

Then do your own homework...

Like how you are able to categorize a lightning surge?

Hi, the element most like to fail, would depend on the circuit design, there is no way that we can give a definitive answer baised on the just the contents of the question.

Capactors generally fail as they age.

Diodes can fail due to over current, or a peak inverse voltage

Resistors can go open circuit if the peak operating wattage is exceeded

Transformers can burn out is their protection circuit is overrated, or overloaded the same could be said for transistors.

Microchips can fail due to over voltage or current surges, but they also fail due to overheating.

So I suppose, if I had to choose one I would suggest transistor failure, but as I said that may not be the case, it is dependent on the circuit design.

Cheers

If the circuit is correctly designed, none will blow, or a varistor and fuse will probably go if the surge is beyond the expectations/experience/competence luck of the designer.

Del, I would have said that but there was no mention of a fuse or a varistor.

The questions are becoming as hard as the answers these days

Along with all of the variables mentioned before is the location of the components. Say a resistor 'blows open', if there is a transistor below it in the circuit layout it would be protected (assuming the resistor blows fast enough).
