Advantages of liquid cooled engine over air cooled engine is better thermal efficiency and smaller size of engine proper. For air cooled engines, fins and radiator acquire lot of space and not practicable for higher size engines. For smaller engines, liquid cooling arrangement add complexities like recirculation system with pumps & its cooling etc., so air cooled is preferred. In all, while choosing engine cooling type, you have to strike a balance among efficiency, space, complexities and overall cost.

Liquid can leak out, air can't. Oh no that's not an advantage...<scampers away>.

  • Lower noise levels.
  • Employment for manufacturers of radiators, thermostats, antifreeze, etc.

Most engines are air-cooled. Some even have a water-to-air heat exchanger on them to make this happen.

So the liquid is air-cooled, via the heat-exchanger (or radiator), whilst the engine is liquid cooled?

That sounds good. Use the water as a heat transfer fluid. Yep. That would work.

Oh, yes another advantage, water is heavier to carry around... no, hang on that another disadvantage.

Thinking about it, air-cooled engines are often partially liquid-cooled as they often rely more on the engine oil for transferring heat.
