Indoor Switching Stations for Underground Powerhouse

08/20/2011 11:46 AM

The conventional type, air insulated outdoor switching stations are normally in use. But what about indoor switching stations? Is GIS the only type of indoor switching stations?

I have read that varieties of indoor switching stations exists in practice including 'monophase arrangement' - an arrangement of grouping the equipments in each phase together. Here, we are talking about 220kV switchgear systems for underground powerhouse.

Regards,

sks

Were not there indoor switching stations before the advent of GIS?

those indoor switching stations before the advent of GIS cost less than GIS? Because as per my knowledge, these GIS are very costly around 3 to 4 times costlier than conventional type.

This link from ABB should answer your questions. They are expensive and used where space is a constraint.

http://search.abb.com/library/Download.aspx?DocumentID=100007&LanguageCode=en&DocumentPartId=&Action=Launch

Customer's need
Rio Light had two old AIS Substations operating
in very expensive locations (m² prices!). They
either wanted to maintain the existing S/S or to
build new S/S
ABB's response
ABB offered two 138/13,8 kV turnkey GIS
Substations, with 12 HV GIS Bays and 88 MV
GIS bays
ABB optimized the space requirements for the
S/S, enabling the saved area to be sold
Customer's benefits
Rio Light received two new S/S and the costs
were covered by the sales revenues of the
additional area

thanks for the link. We were discussing about alternatives to GIS - for indoor powerhouse. There is no space outside, so we have to go indoor substation.
