Mating ASME and DIN Flanges

08/23/2011 5:21 AM

Hi all,

Just wanted to find out if ASME B31.3 allows for the B16.5 flanges to be bolted with DIN flanges (and vice versa)? I believe that their bolt circle diameters and other dimension are not the same, but one can probably get hold of a flange with undrilled bolt holes for the bolts. Are there any special requirements and precautions in this kind of situations where one side of the flange is designed to DIN and the other side of the flange is ASME?

Thanks all.

Sure, you use the special offset bolts (with a zigzag in the middle) from LynDoor™ Industries. I hope you need 1000 of them, so I can get a decent commission.

Or plan B: Get a double-blind flange (no hole in the middle, no bolt holes either), and just drill/bore everything to match.

When working to any pipe/ line specification according to ASME, then NO.

(and vice versa)? ..in this case, vices worser

"Mix 'n Match" is not an engineering fundamental. Special requirements/ precautions will all begin with "you shall not..."

Is there some reason you can't remove the DIN flange and replace it with an ASME flange? Mismatched flanges can't be properly mated and modifying one to fit the other is a bad idea, and probably in violation of all codes.

I don't recall ever looking this up in ASME Section VIII or ANSI B31 but it still sounds cobbled up to me, and I strongly recommend replacing the DIN flange with one of ASME spec.

I agree with pdef....

You should aim for identical flange pairs of either DIN or ASME design.....especiallay in higher pressure/temperature systems

Any mismatched flanges will be a future source of problems for the plant owners.

By the way, I have only encountered this problem when the purchasing department has made a mistake and wants the engineering group to accept the error.

Thanks for the advices, this is indeed a case where they want us to accept the error because of a wrong purchase order.

I cannot find anything concrete from ASME which prohibits this. But as the owner has sent through an instruction to rectify this, there was no arguments, just replaced the flanges.
