Cable Laying - Twisted Pair Instrumentation Cable

08/24/2011 2:13 AM

Problem in laying twisted pair, overall shielded instrumentation cable carrying 24 VDC with armoured control cable carrying 230V AC in the single cable tray for only 5 metres.

As long as you ensure that the overall shield of the instrumentation cable is earthed, I don't foresee any problem in the arrangement.

My facility has a standard practice of isolating power and signal cables due to concerns over artifacts. However I do not believe that there is a code requirement for this. Best to check your local code authority to be sure.

This would be one of ours:

NEC/NFPA 70 : 392.22 Number of Conductors or Cables

There is a code requirement of sorts (although I doubt that the OP is in the USA). All conductors in a raceway must have an insulation level equal to the highest in the raceway. So if you have signal and communications cables along side 480V cables with 600V insulation, the signal cables, or at least the jackets for them, bust be 600V as well. I've seen many IT people get burned by this because they will use off-the-shelf CAT5 cables for an Ethernet run and lay it in a tray next to power cables, then get burned by the inspectors and have to come out to replace it all.
