SS welding can be do without purge gas with gtaw welding. GTAW welding without shieding gas not possibe. But without purge gas, by using flux coated filler wire it possibe to weld ss material. During welding these flux coated filler wire providing good weld slag or porasity or oxidation.

Is this a question or a statement?

It is statement. We used to weld as hook up joint. Without oxidation, porosity and slag inclusion. Also these joint is passed with 100% radiography and IGC test.

Without gas, it isn't GTAW.

Using flux coated wire may, or may not, give good results. That depends on many factors, none of which we know, at the moment.
