"Das Keyboard" for Uber Geeks

08/15/2005 11:36 AM

There's a new keyboard that forces you to memorize the standard keyboard layout by removing the markings on the keys. By eliminating the "hunt and peck" you become faster and hopefully more efficient. The name "Das Keyboard" is reportedly a playful link to it's appeal to "Uber Geeks".

Methinks the true roots of "Das Keyboard" lies in the Saturday Night Live stereotype of a German propensity towards dominance and submission. "Vee vill take away your key markings and you vill enjoy it!"

typing class circa 1980's

I don't know how old you are but if you learned to type in a traditional typing class like I did (on manual typewriters) this is the way it was done. The theory is that by not looking at the keys the signal doesn't have to travel from brain to eyes to brain to fingers, just brain to fingers.

Biogrrl - back in '74, I did take typing in High School, but my guidance counselor advised me to drop it after a quarter because it was dragging my GPA way down! 12 WPM and proud of it! I didn't get as far as the faceless keys.:-)

I took a typing class in highschool too. We all thought it was the dumbest class ever at the time. It ended up being one of the most usefull courses I ever took. It's the best to type and not look. I can crank out papers in no time and only have to cheat for the numbers occasionally.

Das Keyboard.

I could see this being really useful to people who need different keyboards for different languages. The lack of markings would mean that you wouldn't get confused as to which character is which.
