1989 Nissan Stanza - Melted Bazel

08/28/2011 12:03 PM

This nissan has been in the sun for about 4 years and the bazel has melted because of the heat. The bazel is hard to find and the dealer has discontuned the part.

With the bazel gone, the check engine and dash lights are out. I checked the fuse and the fuse is ok. The real problem is that I can not get a sticker with the dash lights out.

There are some plugs that pluged into the bazel that are not connected to anything now.

Can I use a wire in the connecter to get the lights working again?

The dash lights, IF FOR ILLUMINATION ONLY can be wired to the light, or even ignition switch.

The check engine light, if hooked directly to 12 volts will stay on all the time and fail you for a different reason.

What exactly do you mean by 'bazel'? Can you post a picture? I'm surprised that any part of the dash would literally 'melt' despite being in the sun for a number of years. I've got a 10-year old car that has yet to see the interior of a garage and nothing that I'm aware of has melted.

With that out of the way, I'd try a couple things:

1-Check for missing/burned out bulbs

2-Call a junk yard or look on eBay, Craigslist, etc.

3-Get a wiring diagram (should be some online somewhere) and see where those plugs go. Maybe they need to be plugged in to get power to the dash lights. Whatever you do, please DON'T go around sticking unknown wires into unidentified connectors!

I think you mean "bezel" rather than "bazel". And I also don't buy the melted in the solar heat theory (Note that I live in the Phoenix, AZ area and most of the cars here don't have that issue.).

I'd Google Nissan auto parts. Look for "bezel" or dash panel and I bet you'll find it.

If you are going to stick blade connectors into the wiring harness plug just to get it to pass inspection (sticker?), you may as well just go as far as to either wire in a new plug end or cut off the old one and put in new crimp-on blade connectors.

If you cannot figure out the dash lights/fuse thing, just wire up a new dash light power wire and plug it into accessory power on the fuse panel and run that either directly to the dash lights (powered whenever the car is on) or over to the the headlight switch (bypassing the old wiring) which will retain the dimming feature and give daytime control over the dash lights.

The check engine lights is an entirely different post which needs more info, unless the "...plugs that pluged into the bazel that are not connected to anything now" served the check engine light (!).

I had a distorted dash bezel in an old Chevy Chevette years ago. I tossed that and just went without. I don't think ugliness fails you on a vehicle inspection.

We're talking about the car, of course.

I see my spelling is off, thanks. As far as melted, maybe I should have used petrafied.

I do know that there is a switch on the bezel that when I pushed it in, my hand went into the dash.

As far as the power, it is comming to the bezel and not away from it.

And the dealer does not have the part, or ebay, and the other day I could not find it online at all.

So, thanks for your help I have a Haynes manual and i will look it over to see what I can do.

Thanks
