3 Way Switching 208V,1 Phase Lighting System

09/05/2011 11:31 AM

What would be the cheapest way to 3way-control 208V,1phase, 400W (4-qty) lighting fixtures from two different wall switches (3way). The available wall switches are 20a,240V,DPDT; but not available in 3-way DPDT. If 120V relays with 30A,240V DPDT contacts can be used then lighting can be controlled by the 120V,1phase coil-power from 3-Way wall switches (20A,SPDT). Which "Relay" would be cheaper to use. Is "DPDT contactor cheaper to use?

Why do you want a relay? A first year apprentice would work that out I 2 minutes!

Look on Google!

All you need for this are two SPDT switches. Your DPDT switches will also work; just omit the surplus contacts.

in that case, we would have use "tie" to break/make two SPDT switches together. Does toggle switch have tie-handle available? if so, do you know the model# or the Manufacturer's name, please. thanks.

Please note that there is no neutral in 208V,1phase circuit, in three-way switching, we got to break/make all phases (2Poles) together, instead only phase (in case 120V,phase wiring with neutral thru. to load). That is what the question is all about. If it was like your circuit wiring, it was not required to be discussed. thank you, anyway.

If both legs must be switched, just duplicate my diagram with the previously unused surplus contacts of your DPDT switches.

Off the top of my head, I don't know of any commonly available 208V bulbs, but they certainly could exist.

You haven't really described your system, but if it is 208Δ/120Y, you could use 120V lights wired line-to-neutral through single-pole switches.

When you switch a light from 2 locations like stairway it should be 2way switching, why you call it 3way?.
