Dividing Head Problem

09/06/2011 11:19 AM

Hi all

Shown is a Vertex dividing head, which some of you may own. It has a major design flaw.

To allow the chuck to spin freely, the index plate has to be removed and the 2 screws shown have to be loosened and the retaining block rotated to disengage the worm. I have pondered how to modify it so that I can unlock the block without removing the index plate. Has anyone done this? Thanks Tony

You could use a Hirth coupling between the chuck and the outlet shaft of the worm reduction. It is clearance free and centering at same time. The design is not so easy but feasible.

Easy...I keep my wife out of my work life and work out of my home life. When the two mix I end up with far too many "head problems".
