Swing Bender - Folding Steel Plate

04/21/2007 12:01 AM

I need to bend some 50 No 6mm steel plates (which are 900x600mm). A single longitudinal right angle fold, with corner radius small but not super-critical.

It needs to be operated by hand, so would need a reasonable lever arm. Surely there is a sketch out there somewhere in backyard - or farmyard - fabricationland??

Hi,

Are you havening any image of bended plates. Because i am able to give idea, but for that, it's required to know in which size & side you would like to bend?

Also which size of radius you want at bending place.

How much accuracy you want?

some question's if possible give details.

Regards,

Kandarp

Thanks. This would be the completed item, 900mm long, vertical bit 200mm, horizontal bit 400mm. Radius: small but not critical. Accuracy: 1 or 2mm, but repeatability within 1 mm. Not sure if the image will come out properly, but you could think of it as a 200x400 unequal angle, 900 long.

Even if the bend is 600mm long, that would be very hard to do by hand. I suppose, tho, given a long enough lever....

The 1 meter lever on my small bender allows me to do not too much more that 100mm or so, if the stock is 6mm thick.

Yes, quite right. Maybe a "come-along" will be needed, or a set of screw jacks (!!). In any case, the members from which we fabricate it can be very strong and large. 610UB if need be.

I recently had a piece of steel bent in a fairly similar way, and took it to a fabricator with a press brake (a fairly fancy one, with lots of lights and widgets and readouts.) It cost me nothing because it was one of those places set up for large jobs, and they did my small job mainly for fun. It took them awhile because they were concerned about getting the angle just right. But if they had 50 pieces to do, it would take them about 5 seconds per piece, and the cost would be less than building your own manual bender, I'd guess. A thought... but then maybe you have a future use for the bender.

Due to the high bending moment a swing bender would be more difficult to make and to master. Use better a +/- die (a simple 90° with correction for end angle) and a frame to press them together. It will be easier to generate the required forces (about 35...40kN) then to generate the bending moment. The only problem in both solutions will be the geometric synchronisation at the two ends if it is not within tight tolerances the result is a twisted structure

I too am in the same boat. I am also on the look out for folding machine- requirement to bend 3mm steel sheets of 1200 mm length. I believe same is in line with your requirement. If anyone can help please contact me on sisiraa@gmail.com.
