How to Calculate Volume Flow Rate of the Dust Collection Unit?

09/12/2011 2:10 AM

We are going to install a dust collection machine to our machine shop. My dust collection hood is 12"X12" inch square design. My machine motor RPM is 3000 and dia is 255mm. How to calculate volume flow rate of the dust? (CFM cubic feet per minute)?

Anyone suggestions?

Impeller geometry and motor performance in loaded conditions is important to calculate CFM , I don't think you can calculate it with out having all that data and expertise.Yes if you wish you can estimate CFM by measuring it with various kind of anemometers those are available in market.

I found a method to calc CFM with RPM and dia of motor pulley thru net. Q=Velocity*Area(hood area)

Can?

Yes you can, But velocity used in formula is not fan speed its air velocity? and You have to measure it with some equipment. thats what an anemometer do, Or you have to calculate air velocity from propeller design and system performance data. Can you do it?

no i dont have that datas, because first of all i need to calc the CFM, then based on that we are going to buy the dust collection machine.

So why not talk it through with the vendor?

You should contact to the manufacturers of dust collector, and they will ask for the desired information from you to make the right suggestion for your application.
