DC Resistance of MV Cable

09/14/2011 11:25 AM

Can any one Calculate and Explain the DC resistance of Cables with following Specification, at

300mm2 XLPE Cu, 15KV,L=6km.

95mm2, XLPE Cu, 15KV L=300m.

What should be the Scale selected if one measure it with Wheatstone Bridge having

Scales 40 mOhm to 500mOhms,

Hope you understand my question.

R = ρ x L/A

Anything more costs money

There should be resistance per meter of cu. So its total resistance is given by (ohms/m)xKMx1000. I can't resist to answering this :)

I am providing you the DC resistance of the 15KV cable for 1kilometer length at 20C & manufactured per IEC502 by reputed Co. in Saudi Arabia:

a. 0.0601 Ohm/km for 300mm2, XLPE, copper cable

b. 0.193 Ohm/km for 95mm2, XLPE, copper cable

This may help your information

Thanks

Dear we are using Cable from ELSWEDY saudi arabia at Yanbu SABIC project..

The results is as under for 300mm2, XLPE,Cu at 20c

.2195 ohms/km..

is this OK.

Does your employer know that your profession opinion comes from an internet forum?

<...is this OK....>

The forum cannot know.

Use a second person check on the design locally, with all design documents and calculations to hand.

Why taking pain? Youcan get this data directly from any cable manufacturer's catalogue.

If you are in Saudi Arabia, you must have catalogue from Saudi cable Co. or Riyadh Cable Company.

One thing must be noted that DC Resistance at 20C of copper cable of size 300mm2 must be same for low Voltage cable or medium Voltage cable or PVC/PVC insulated or XLPE/PVC insulated that is 0.0601 Ohm/Km. Resistance value is based upon the copper material, copper wire/conductor cross section and its length.

The value you have shown may be a print mistake and it can not be so high. The value matches nearly for 150mm2 cu cable

d.c. resistance does not depends on voltage but depends on temperature

300mm2 XLPE Cu, 15KV,L=6km. at 20oC =6000/58/300=0.344828 ohms.

For 90oC as XLPE insulation is rated you have to multiply by (234.5+90)/(234.5+20)=1.275. Then=0.344828x1.275049=0.439672 ohms

95mm2, XLPE Cu, 15KV L=300m.=300/95/58=0.05446 at 20oC

For 90oC=0.05446*1.275049=0.069439 ohms

In mohm you have to multiply by 1000.
