Ultrasonic Flow Meter Trouble Shooting

09/14/2011 5:26 PM

We have a GE ISX878 with the 4MHz 408 clamp on transducers, and despite all programming efforts (ALL parameters are entered and double checked) we get no apparent return signal, as we flash and E2 error code that syas that is the problem. We have nothing to detect 4MHz signals. Is there some way to verify an output signal without a high frequency sound detector? If there is an output, then I would know the problem is in the transducer mounting or the instrument parameter programming. Can you easily rent a high freq. detector? Ultrasonics is not an area I venture into often.

Hi,

I have some questions for you:

Is this a new installation?

Is it possible to see on the transmitter's display what the sound speed value is?

What type of product are you measuring?

Is the sound speed set up for that type product?

Sorry I give you questions instead of answers but I just need some more info. If is not a new installation and the transmitter was working at one time then is possible that the transducers moved and became misaligned. There may be scale, debris or other type of obstructions between the pipe and the transducers.

One time after a turnaround in one of or units, one of our ultrasonic meters wouldn't work during start up , it took me I while to figured out that someone hit and bent one of the transducers (scaffold builders).

Thanks

Phys,

If this transmitter is brand new, I could recommend you contact to GE Sensing people support in order to check the model, parameters and application, if there any problem with the sensors or transmitter maybe you can get a new one without pay additional money (guarantee)

Regards

JP

The energy from the transducers will get absorbed/disbursed/ by internal corrosion in the pipes and will not be available for either reception or reflection to the receiving transducer.

How old is the pipe and is it subject to corrosion from the medium or pollutants in the medium?

Skid under construction? Is there fluid in the pipe? No fluid, no return signal.

Well ,not really. I have found fluid levels in boiler pipe that was very corroded and thats using a 5 Mhz transducer.

If you are certain that you set up the unit correctly, then you have a product warranty issue with GE/Panametrics.

You did not say anything about contacting the vendor. Work with their customer service and technical support personnel.

You don't need to rent special equipment for getting this working.

Hi,

Have you checked the continuity of the signal cables?

If not please do so.
