Using Schottky Rectifiers On A Power Transformer

09/15/2011 5:40 PM

I have a 12v power supply with a burnt out rectifier on it. It can give out 8 amps. I have two schottky rectifiers the kind with 3 pins coming out of the bottom. How would I use them to make a full wave rectifier?

those are essentially two diodes with either a common anode or a common cathode (they make them both ways.). Assuming you have two identical ones, you would mount them back to back and leave the common leg separate and tie the each single anode/cathode of each device to it's corresponding pin on the other device. now you have essentially four pins two will be your input and two will be your output depending on which sort of devices you have. or you can use one as a half-wave rectifier and cut your diode drops in half.

Nope! You caught the idea that these three lead diode packs will have either a common anode or a common cathode, so one cannot make a full bridge rectifier out of this. (I can only recall common cathode diodes.) In a full bridge there is a common anode pair and a common cathode pair of diodes. Now if the transformer's secondary has a center tap, then and only then can these two diode packs be used as single diodes to make a full wave rectifier for the single output voltage. There will be very little benefit to pair up the diodes but one could.

Oh well, I will have to find 4 high current diodes then or just buy a bridge rectifier.

"shottky diode with 3 pins" means absolutely nothing. Depending on part number it could be two diodes configured as common anode or cathode, it could also be ONE diode with two external pins anode or cathode as one (shorted) and the center pin (and usally the body) as the other diode pole. S.M.

Actually they are available as common anode, common cathode and series. If you have series connected you can make a bridge out of them. You also need the data sheet to know if they have sufficient Vr for your application.

Just as an example see http://www.microsemi.com/en/sites/default/files/datasheets/MSK_A_CD200-Rev1.pdf

It is easier to find a new rectifer than try even look at using schottky rectifers, I have presumed that the burnt out rectifer was a 4 pin type.

Cheers

Bridge rectifiers are too cheap and easy to mount to waste time reverse engineering with spare parts .

Hate to ruin a good surprise, but 'too cheap' it is because it is long now produced in countries that people work at 1/10 of our income, and we f**cking buy too cheap things, borrowing the f**cking money they make. Won't be "too cheap" for long in this manner. S.M.

Check Radio Shack - they have full bridge rectifiers for less than $10 USD.

How did you know it's a schotkey?

Give the P/N or simply buy a bridge or build your own from 4 single diodes

If it's a switched-mode power supply (SMPS) the diodes must be schottkys.
