Cement Stains on Window Glass

09/21/2011 12:55 AM

When the men here poured a concrete beam atop of my windows they left some cement drops on the glass and let it dry. Now when I clean the glass panes, I notice some matte drop like stains that I cannot clean off.

Have you experienced this also and what can be done? The glass is a triple pane sandwich, not tinted but very expensive. The side that has been affected is 4 mm thick. The stains look like a kind of etched spots. But on the surface.

Thank you for your help. D.

I think muriatic acid can get this off, but check first. Wear gloves and face guard.

It's etched. You might try some jewelers rouge and a polish wheel.

tooth paste on a wet cloth. tooth paste has fine abrasives that should polish the etching marks off.

The only way I've found to remove these, is to polish them out.

Start with #0000 steel wool, liquid dish detergent, and a little water.. Go very light. Once the stain is gone stop immediately. Don't over do it. When the spot is wet, you won't be able to tell if it is gone. Go lightly and allow to dry. Now you will have a slightly dull spot. From here, automotive buffing compound or perhaps metal polish with a very light abrasive will polish up the glass.

This is a time consuming process.

Before you proceed on your expensive windows, take a piece of dry steel wool and create a dull spot on a piece of throw away glass. You want to perfect your technique there first, before proceeding to the actual windows.

I would say, 'have fun', but it's not fun.

Working in a cement works I often had to use vinegar in the water to wash my car.

I hope he gets lucky. I've seen the alkali from the concrete physically etch the glass.

Dear all,

I commented yet because now I am trying to get (find) some stuff together here on the island (and that is not so evident). The muriatic acid gave no real difference - probably because the stains are etched. I try to get the cheapest first - jewelers rouge - because I checked on the internet there are kits, up to $1.500.00.

I used some diamond board powder once in Belgium (black) with a polishing disk with succes and cerium oxide would do the job too - only I am in the boonies.

The tooth paste I have - hopefully a good one. I hoped upon a cheap kitchen or garden remedy. I will keep you posted. Thanks

Boraxo maybe or gypsum from the hole you knocked in the drywall or silica sand

Concrete is a very strong alkali, glass can be etched by a strong alkali stripping atoms from the surface. The only cure is to polish out the etch by buffing with very fine abrasives. Someone suggested jewellers rouge, which will work. This search tree shows many methods.

Jewellers Rouge to polish glass

Apply Sulphuric acid or caustic along with a detergent. Glass can with stand both and not cement. Start with dilute to med concentrations and also on reaction time criteria,

Phosphoric acid is another safe alternate. Even a toilet cleaner should be workable.

Do spotting tests & proceed. Use cotton buds to apply.

It appears to me that some people think there is still some cement left. The cement is gone, and the alkali in the cement (which is very alkaline, Ph 13 or more) strips the glass matrix by removing surface atoms. This is gone, leaving an etched surface, like the inside of a light bulb. The only way to remediate this is with a classical polishing with a very fine polish that is also harder than glass - jewellers rouge is this. A small amount is dabbed onto a wet cloth and you rub the glass with a firm back and forth, changing the axis as you buff and keeping it damp. It takes a while, but it is doable.
