Reaction vs Impulse

09/21/2011 2:45 AM

which is better, (o&m wise) reaction or impulse type steam turbine? particular for small capacity units (5 - 10 MW) and low pressure application (10barg or lower).

stating the advantages/disadvantages of each will be much appreciated.

thanks much!

This article suggests that lower pressures tend to use reaction type turbine impellers.

lito

reaction type turbines are more efficient when it comes to low pressures. As far as the operation and maintenance goes, such turbines usually require less maintenance due to even heating and cooling. The designer usually ensures enough temperatures and gaps between reaction blades to avoid water droplets hitting the blades at high velocities. More importantly in low pressure turbines the steam velocities are not as high as in high pressure turbines, therefore less maintenance is required. Operationally I personally dont think there is a significant difference but an operation engineer will guide u better
