Flow Meter Compensation

09/21/2011 7:07 AM

Hi all!!!!!!!

Does liquid flow calculated in BBL require Temperature/Pressure compensation?

Or else let me put it this way ..Should all volumetric and mass flow be compensated?

My understanding is that the temperature/ pressure compensation for flow is done only when the standard measurements are calculated (e.g MMSCFD,MMSCMD).

Please clarify ...

I would like to have a clear understanding on compensation..

Thanks in advance

Compensation is based on the principle that gas is compressible and the mass of the gas varies with temperature and pressure. Measurements are frequently referenced to 'design pressure' and 'design temperature'. When the flow pressure or temperature deviates from the design values, the flow rate measurement is in error.

Liquids are generally considered not-compressible so liquid flow is rarely pressure compensated, but the density of liquids varies with temperature so liquid flow is sometimes temperature compensated.

Volumetric measurement units are compensated if in standard cubic (distance) per (time). SCFM, for example, is compensated. CFM is uncompensated units.
