Hydrotest Allowable is 90 Percent of the Ambient Yield Stress

09/23/2011 1:09 AM

Dear all,

Note in PVElite:

For ASME Division 1, the hydrotest allowable stress is 1.3 times the ambient allowable stress for the material. When the vessel is tested, the largest circumferential stress should not exceed this value. If you wish to use 90 percent of the ambient yield stress instead of 1.3 the ambient allowable, then you can check this box.

If i take 90 percent of yield as allowable during hydrotest, what considerations regarding deformation?

Regards

I hope the language in PVElite is not opaque as this attempted quotation.

If things are generally as unclear as this, their whole program sucks.

Dear ASD23789,

I have 2 queries with respect to ur question:

1- Please clarify whether ur question is with respect to ASME SEC VIII-1 or ASME SEC-1?

2- Please clarify the basis/reference for considering hydrotest allowable stress as 1.3 times the ambient allowable stress for the material.

As per clause UG-99(b) of ASME SEC VIII-1, hydrotest pressure is 1.3 times MAWP or design pressure (Note-34). Vessel adequacy should be checked considering allowable stresses during hydrotest as 90% of ambient yield stress.

Dear Mayank.Technip,

Thanks for your reply.

1) It is for ASME Section VIII Div:01.

2) Regarding your second question I am still confused. Please help.

Regards

Dear asd,

the first line of ur question is:

For ASME Division 1, the hydrotest allowable stress is 1.3 times the ambient allowable stress for the material.

Im asking you to pls clarify from where u picked up this information as it seems incorrect.Pls clarify the reference book/code clause no. etc for the same.

Pls note that hydrotest pressure is 1.3 times design pressure (note-34) or MAWP * lowest stress ratio of the equipment.
