Diesel Generator Oil Change Without Stopping

09/23/2011 12:50 PM

We are looking to perform oil change on diesel generator of about 725 kVA to 925 kVA rating (contunuous duty). The key is to be able to perform the oil change without stopping the gen set. I heard that CAT generaotrs have some kind of system like that.

Any suggestions?

Talk to Caterpillar.

Maybe even go on their web site and see what they have to offer.

When all else fails, read the owner's manual that came with the Gen-set.

Just curious, does your avatar happen to depict one of those very rare Vagina Nut trees?

Cummins also have a system for this task it is called "Centry" the oil is stored in a makeup tank and pumped back and forth to the sump. Also available as part of the system is an oil burn system which means no oil changes are needed. It depends what country you are in whether you can utilise the oil burn though, as countries such as Australia won't allow any "tampering" with fuel. If an Eliminator is also fitted there will not be any filter changes either.

Back in the late 50's early 60's one of the logging companies close to where I lived in Idaho went to Canada to log for a few winters. It would be embarassing for me to repeat verbatim how cold the loggers said it was...lets just say it was very cold.

They told stories of how they never shut the equipment off because it would never start again and they told of how they changed oil while the engines were running.

What they did was install shut off valves in place of the drain plugs on the engines and in the lines going to the oil filters. Back then most of the engines used remote Luber-Finer filters.

To change oil in the engine, they would open the drain valve while pouring new heated oil in the engine from 5 gallon cans. Oil was cheap back then and they would pour it in until it looked clean coming out the drain. It seems to me that a lot of the Cats could be running when you checked the oil level. I'm not sure about the trucks, but they were loggers...they figured something out.

They simply shut the valves on the oil lines going to the filters when they wanted to change them.

As a side note: It was widely reported it took a bottle of Seagrams a day to keep the boss thawed out.

You could change oil the logger way, it just might be a little spendy these days though.

GA Randal, I've seen it done this way too, but the equipment was already plumbed for it and that's why I recommended them to refer to their owner manual.

Its possible for dry sump engines where lube oil is kept outside engine sump, what you need is to have 2 separate lube oil tanks connected to engine lubricating system.A change over valves installed to choose which oil tank you want to use,and other tank which is due for oil change can be drained, and new oil filled.

But take advice from Engine builder .
