New Windows

09/24/2011 1:39 AM

I am in process of looking into new energy efficient windows and am stuck. Technically looking at the construction the windows we've looked at so far. Who made these things? The workmanship is sickening. And these qualify for energy star credits and tax incentives.

I just can't get over all the crap and how difficult it is to buy a freakin window that is AAMA certified, .28 U factor, .24 SHGC. DP50. I am sealing this house up tighter than a crabs ass, with assist of air exchanger. The dam windows are killing me. I would appreciate all input from the community.

Thanks Guys/Gals

You are not making it clear what you want.

If you have been through that site and selected what you want then you start contacting suppliers.

'Tony 2 Guys & a Pickup' are not going to carry the better quality windows more than likely. They will not be located in the bargain basement either.

"Who made these things?" Sorry, we don't know; we can't see the label from here. Can you see it from there?

If there is some problem with design or workmanship please describe.

Well one thing is your location and the standards for your window. Your not in an area that is that hurricane prone so there is not much of market for a DP 50. So you will not find to many in that area willing to spend the money on developing one. If your set on a DP 50 you will have to look at manufactures along the gulf coast.

The DP 50 rating also covers rain fall and you don't usually get that with a standard sill on a double hung window. Sill would need to be higher to hold more water. The test is done with a vacuum with the equivalent of 8" of rain fall and hour. The only way to combat that is higher sill so the water column negates the vacuum.

So you may not find just what you want with that rating there either.

Note I set here surrounded by lots of windows I believe they have gotten an LC 55 rating on some and they meet your AAMA and U factor standards plus others. We are working on a DP window now just not ready for market. PM me I'll see if i can help. We do sell in your area just not residential.

Wasn't sure until I looked but all the windows making the DP 50 rating are either awning windows or casements. You can look here to see what products are offered and what type window they are.

Go to Home Depot and tell them you want some windows that meet the Miami Dade specifications.

All the HD stores in Florida are full of them. They'll make them to the style, specs, and exact sizes you need with any kind of glass you want, double insulated, impact/double insulated, tinted, LowE and Argon filled for a competitive price.

Andersons or Pella are nice and tight.

These are some Pella vinyl framed double insulated, Argon filled, LowE casement windows I installed for a friend of mine on Sanibel Island.

The lock up tighter than a submarine hatch and fit perfectly into the old openings that some really crappy aluminum awning windows were literally falling out of.

Guarranteed to go 140mph in a blowing rain and not leak or blow out, too!

Been looking at Pella and Jeld Wen. Not in the stores though. What they carry in the stores are below grade around here anyways. We can order them through the stores though. Now it is waiting on the MFG's to get back to me on what they can supply. We can still get the tax credits up till 31Dec, so we are taking advantage of that as well. I just never thought it would be so difficult to buy decent windows.

Thanks for all the inputs.

You're not going to find good stuff at the big box stores, I don't care whose name is on the product. (I just went thru some minor misery with a Watts brass plumbing product that I'm sure would not have been a problem thru a plumbing distributer.)

When we replaced our windows, we bought a Pella triple pane product for energy savings, but the noise reduction was our biggest benefit. We went to a Pella store, they gave us the name of a couple of Pella certified installers, and even though the price was high, it was worth it to get a good product well installed.

Lots of people are putting together and selling windows. Some do an OK job of putting them together, but a lot are just cheaply constructed because the majority of consumers want the low bid product. Then the low bid contractor with the beat up pick-up comes by and installs them quickly. (Chop to fit, paint to match . . . if you can get them to paint!) Buyer beware, you usually get what you pay for.

We settled on Jeld Wen AAMA Certified, Energy Star and Tax break qualified directly from Jeld Wen we're doing our own installation as well as all the construction. It will be better than code requirements in all aspects of the build.

Many complain but keep right on with the same system.

I use Windows and don't often have any problem - not worth the time or effort to do something else.

I've been running XP since I was forced to change from 95 2nd Ed. I have nno problems with XP. I also have 7 Pro that came on new LT. None of my programs worked so added new HD and re-loaded XP and 0 issues. No reason to switch to something else either.
