Pressure Transmitter

09/28/2011 12:43 PM

How can we check whether a pressure transmitter is working fine or it is not working?

That answer is not inexact in any ways, it is concise and true; even if it was intended to ashame the OP.

If you are referring to my answer, it was not intended in any way to shame the OP.

It was all that needed to be said. If I had wanted to shame the OP, it would have been obvious.

I take offense at your implication.

Use a calibrated gauge inline with the transducer, and verify both readings are the same.

What is the difference between a pressure transducer and a pressure transmitter?. We used a pressure transducer to measure fuel level in a tank located about 50m from the switchboard and connected by screened cable to a digital display in the switchboard.

After programming it as per manufacturer's(OMEGA) cataloque we compared the reading with the fuel level shown by the mechanical indicator.

In colloquial terms are both the same.

In a more detailed description, a transducer is a device that converts one type of energy into another, so you can meassure a directly proportional signal of the parameter you want to monitor.

The term transmitter or sender reffers to the conditioning device that processes that signal to convert it to industry standard parameters: 0-20mA, 4-20mA, -5 to 5VDC, 0 to 10 VDC, -10 to 10VDC, etc. all these analog; or serial communications to a digital apparatus.

Send it to the instrument workshop and get it tested?

Re: Pressure Transmitter

The manufacturer is the best source to suggest the correct method of checking a pressure transmitter. Apply pressure and check output is the precise answer and one must have a reliable analogue pressure gauge of the same pressure range in parallel to read the applied pressure and a mili ammeter with a DC power supply or a voltmeter to check the output. The scheme of connection has to be obtained from the transmitter catalogue or from the manufacturer. A hydraulic hand pump can be used to apply the desired pressure and different pressures should be applied within the operating range.

Very simple.

Check the Pressure transmitter range (LRV & URV) on the HART.

With no pressure applied, check transmitter O/P (if LRV = 0), or by applying (LRV value) it should show around 4mA (If the transmitter O/P is 4-20mA).

Then apply max. pressure (URV value) and check, it should show around 20mA O/P.

If it shows as explained above, the transmitter is functioning properly.
